AFRICAN MILLINERY COMPETITION 2025
1ST PRIZE • ‘Crown of Her Roots’ •
Taiwo Aluko Tommy Hat Affairs
This year the African Milliner’s Network announced the launch of the African Millinery Competition. The initiative celebrates the artistry and cultural heritage of African milliners across the continent and in the diaspora while providing a unique platform for creativity and visibility on the global fashion stage. The inaugural edition of the competition, which was open to amateur and professional milliners alike, invited entrants to submit innovative designs based on its 2025 theme, Afro-Fusion. The theme encouraged participants to blend traditional African elements with contemporary techniques. Entries were evaluated on the basis of creativity and originality, craftsmanship, cultural relevance, functionality, material use, and aesthetic appeal. The list of judges included designer-makers Velma Owusu Bempah, Matthew Eluwande and Stefano Costabile, the British Hat Guild's Carole Denford, and The Hat Magazine editor-in-chief Elly Stemerdink.
