Mars Dilbert – Living vintage A familiar face at Goodwood Revival,
Mars Dilbert is known for her impeccable ensembles drawn from the 1930s to 1950s. On Saturday she appeared in a 1940s brown
gabardine suit, complemented by accessories she has gathered over decades of collecting. “I’ve been collecting vintage clothes and
accessories for almost 30 years,” she explained. “At first I didn’t wear them, I just admired the craftsmanship. I might carry a handbag as a nod to the era, but I didn’t have the confidence for full outfits. Over time, I began to wear vintage every day.” Her Revival look combined coral earrings,
gloves, a large side bag and suede shoes. “The shoes are replicas,” she said. “True vintage shoes are delicate and hard to find in wearable condition.” Much of her wardrobe comes from vintage fairs, car boot sales and charity shops in the days when they still carried quality pieces. Mars emphasises the importance of upkeep.
“Part of vintage is accepting that it’s slow. You have to mend and alter, and it helps to learn a little sewing. These garments have lasted longer than we have, so we owe them respect.” The highlight of her outfit was the hat, designed in a 1940s style she had long admired. “It’s based on a hat I saw in a film and on the cover of a 1940s Marie Claire,” she said. “A friend in Yorkshire, who works under the name Little Sister Millinery, reconstructed it for me using only vintage materials. I love that it’s both authentic and personal.”
