MP Nigel celebrates his half

century THE Ribble Valley’s MP celebrated his half century with a party in his home village of Pendleton. The Swan With Two

Necks proved an excellent venue as Nigel Evans was joined by friends and col leagues. He has lived in Pendle

ton for the past eight years. The pub landlord, Steve

Dilworth, led the fun by dressing up as Mrs Mar garet Thatcher and a great time was had by all. (T111107/18)

D ea th on luxury yacht - natural cau se s

A 35-YEAR-OLD Clitheroe man who collapsed while working as chief engi neer on a luxury motor yacht died of natural causes. An inquest heard that Simon Geof

frey Johnson, of Brownlow Street, was found collapsed on the yacht, which was berthed in Genoa, Italy. An Italian pathologist had suggested

right ventricular disease may have been the cause of death, but a post-mortem examination carried out in this country rebutted that as the cause of death. Dr Mohammed Aslam, a consultant

pathologist at Royal Blackburn Hospi tal, said he believed the cause of death

Five-vehicle accident

c lo se s road

FIVE cars were involved in an acci dent on the notorious Devil’s Elbow road in Read. The dangerous stretch of the A671

Whalley Road, which links Burnley with the Ribble Valley, had to be closed for more than two hours on Sunday as three cars had to be towed away after the acci dent. A 56-year-old man from the Burnley

area was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink-driving after failing a roadside breath test and released on police bail. His Rover MG was one of the cars seri

ously damaged in the accident. Three people were treated for minor

injuries and were taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital after the accident at 5-05 p.m. on Sunday. Sgt Pete Sculpher, of Eastern Division

Road Policing Unit, said: “It would appear at this stage that one car has hit several others and spun around. “A lot of road safety work has been done

on this stretch, but it appears that one of the root causes of the accident may be alcohol related. Thankfully there were only minor injuries, but it could have been a lot more serious.” Anyone with information on the acci

dent can call Sgt Sculpher on 01254 353211. • The A671 Whalley Road was said to

be the fifth most risky road for motorists according to a European study earlier this year. Safety work including resurfacing and anti-skid coating was done in 2004. The speed limit was also cut from 60 m.p.h. to 50 m.p.h.

Barlicker WINS Panasonic Plasma

JVC

Chris and Emma from Barnoldswick were delight ed with their purchase of a 42” Panasonic plasma at the Harry Garlick Mad Weekend recently. Why? They got it for FREE. For many years Harry Garlick’s have run a pro motion in November giving customers the chance to get up to 75% off their pur chase. This year’s promo tion was back to its original format, only bigger and better - this year some of the discount vouchers actually gave the products away for FREE.

The promotion ran across all seven of the Harry Garlick retail outlets and generated great excitement amongst cus tomers and staff. Store Manager Andy Barrett enthused that ‘it’s great to have lucky dip back - it

was just like it used to be - customers getting a real buzz from the thrill of win ning some real bargains.’

And customers all over the region were not disap pointed. As well as giving away a free plasma, Julie from Salterforth got a whopping 75 % off her new laptop, Mr A of Burnley got a FREE wash er, Mr Halstead of Burnley got 75% off a 37" Panasonic plasma, whilst other customers at clitheroe and nelson got a lovely surprise when they picked FREE tickets on the purchase of their vacuum cleaners.

For all those who missed out last weekend, call in this weekend to discusss a deal with the sales team at your nearest branch of Harry Garlick - you won't be disappointed..
