O ONLINE Dwyer sets sights on
Tour return ________By Ahmer Khokhar
CLITHEORE golfer Paul Dwyer has adopted the mantra “when the going gets tough the tough get going” in a bid to recapture the form that earned him a European Tour card two years ago. After six years of trying, the 34-year-
old gained his card in 2006 after an impressive Challenge Tour campaign the year before, but then his luck appeared to desert him. He struggled to make an impact on the
main tour, and last year his poor run con tinued back on the Challenge Tour, but he did at least manage to keep his ranking for next year. Last week Dwyer made his debut at the
Australian Masters at Melbourne’s Hunt- ingdale course, but he missed the cut, and is now in New Zealand for the Michael Hills New Zealand Open, which starts today. “I’ve had a poor two years but I was
delighted to get the call to spend a fort night playing in these two events in Aus tralia and New Zealand,” said after his first round in Melbourne. “It’s a fine line between winning and
Paul Dwyer
losing in any sport, and sometimes you need a bit of luck at the right time, but you also need to work hard and play well. “I’ve never been to Australia before,
and Huntingdale was probably one of the best courses I’ve ever played. You have to keep getting out of bed in the morning and keep working and keep believing. Sometimes it’s not easy but you have got to keep trying. “After the New Zealand Open and I’m
going to play on the Challenge Tour next year to try and get my European Tour card back that way.” After a disappointing opening round in
Melbourne, where he finished four-over at Huntingdale, Dwyer recovered to shoot one-under par in round two, to give him some encouragement before teeing off at The Hills course in New Zealand.

they should really have won. And that would have
been a result that would have seen them catch their opponents in the table. Barry Shuttleworth
replaced John Osborne at left back, with Osborne replacing Russ Clarke at centre half. The only other
change to the team which drew at Chorley on Saturday saw Paul Fildes starting in place of Mickey Saunders in the front line. But as the game

ple of chances before they took the lead in the 21st minute when Neil Zarac controlled a left wing cross, before half- volleying it home from eight yards. Instead of building on
that lead and turning their domination into
more goals, they surren dered their advantage almost immediately as a loose ball was rifled home for a Woodley equaliser. Clitheroe created fur
ther chances before half time, and although they were on top, they went into the interval still level. It was a similar story
after the break, but the visitors did have more chances themselves, and could have sneaked an unlikely winning goal but for a timely chal lenge from Blues keeper Paul Horridge. His opposite number
made some good saves too, and a packed defence blocked many a
shot and throughball as the final whistle went with the score stuck at 1-
1. Although the Blues
will have been boosted by another positive result, it was disap pointing not to turn such a dominant per formance into three points. Clitheroe had another
boost just before kick off as both Gary Stop- forth and Ian Flannery signed 18-month Shaw- bridge contracts. Stopforth, a former
captain of Blackburn Rovers’ reserve team, joined the club at the start of the season fol lowing his release from Ewood Park.
