A GROUP determined to put “East Lancashire People First” has been launched in the Ribble Valley. The organisation, which covers
the Valley, as well as Burnley, Rossendale, Pendle and Hynd- burn, is an independent, self-
advocacy group of people with a learning disability. People First chairman Ian Greenwood said that the group intended to work on initiatives aimed at promoting the contribution made by people with a learning disability throughout East Lancashire. “We

have already been involved in dis cussions about a possible advoca cy qualification with East Lancs Advocacy and are planning on offering training about learning disability,” said Mr Greenwood. Anyone interested should call Andrew Turner on 07976 034520.

True love finds its home on a fairground waltzer...
A CLITHEROE couple have given a donation of more than £500 to the life saving work of Community First Responders.
When Tom and Ira Wilkinson cele
brated their golden wedding in Septem ber, they asked for donations instead of gifts from their many friends and family
members, who gathered for a knees-up at Clitheroe Cricket Club.
The well-known local couple, of Lilac
Grove, met when Tom worked on the fun fairs, and are now great-grandparents. They chose Community First Respon
ders because their son-in-law is one of the local volunteers who rush to heart attack, victims with a defibrillator machine in the vital first minutes following an attack. Earlier this year, Ira wrote to “Worlds
Fair”, the national magazine of the fun fair industry, with the story of how she and Tom met:

parents had divorced and neither of them wanted him, so he found a home and work with Bob Wilson and Sons Funfairs and travelled the length of England with them. Each year at Whitsuntide, in Shirley, West Midlands, there was a carni val and Bob Wilson’s Funfair. Opening night was on Friday, I was 17 and went to the fair. “There I met him on the waltzer, throw
ing peanuts at him. He walked me home and on Saturday night I was there again, he was working the waltzer as usual. I waited for him to finish work and walk me home, but he had an extra job to do and it became late, so he told me to go. I didn’t go, it was now 11-45 p.m. and as I waited at the gate I received a big clout round the ears. It was my step-father. He was not amused and chased me home on his bike (this was 19561). “I explained what happened, Tom was

invited to Sunday tea and I duly went to ask him. When I arrived at the closed fair, young Willie Wilson, aged 10, told Tom ‘the blonde’ was looking for him, possibly trouble brewing! I eventually found him and took him home for tea. “It turned out he was doing his Nation

al Service and working for the fair while on leave. He was stationed at Kineton. We wrote to each other and he came to my home when he was on leave. In October 1956 he was demobbed and we became engaged and 15 months later we were married, in September 1957. “We moved to Lancashire from Shirley,
had three lovely daughters (Jacqueline, Diane and Michelle), eight grandchildren and our first great-grandchild, and this is the year of our golden wedding. Thanks to the ‘Worlds Fair’ we read that Bob Wil son’s Funfair was at Solihull in June, so we took a special sentimental journey to visit the fair. Luck was with us because we found Willie, now William Wilson MBE, who had just celebrated his 60th birthday! “While I wandered around, my hus

band spent time with Willie, recalling old times and fair workers he had worked with, most retired, some sadly passed away. The only thing missing was our beloved Waltzer. Rides are so much bigger and faster now.”
Fair is voted a success
OFFICIALS behind the East Lancs Hospice’s Christmas Fair have declared it a huge success. More than 400 people attended the
event held earlier this month, which raised a total of £5,536. A spokesman said: “This fantastic
achievement would not have been pos sible without the support of hospice volunteers, local businesses, the gener al public and, of course, the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times for publicising the fair.”

Animator is a popular choice
A WOULD-BE Wallace and Gromit ani mator entertained the latest meeting of the Ribble Valley Camcorder Club. Philip Rimmer, of Preston Moviemak
ers, showed his first animated film titled “The Dance” featuring Plasticine models dancing to music played by Preston Phil- harmonia.
The orchestra had asked for someone to
make a film to match their music. The musicians were so impressed with the result they showed the film during the introduction to a recent show at Preston Guild Hall.
Mr Rimmer also showed a film of how
he had carried out the project. Since then he has progressed into making an animat ed film using drawings of Tom Finney to Handel’s Water Music. His latest project was a collaboration
using computer imagery which entailed birds singing “Match of the Day” at a football stadium. Members were enthralled by his work and may now con sider doing some future work in this area.
• At the recent North West Film Festi
val, held in Cheshire, the club-produced film “Pedal Power” achieved third posi tion. Members have been busy recently creating films which will be shown at the fourth annual Christmas show to be held next Friday evening at St Michael and St John’s Social Centre in Lowergate. There will be a presentation of awards
for the “Best Under Three Minute Film” by a club member and the “Best Over Three Minute film”. The show is open to the public by ticket
only and will consist of two 50-minute shows. The event starts at 7-30 p.m. prompt and tickets can be obtained from Richard Dugdale on 01200 424962 or 07836 505102. • Club meetings usually take place on
the first and third Thursday each month. The next meeting will be held at the Pen dle Club in Lowergate on Thursday at 7- 30 p.m. and will be a filming night using a green screen, which enables film overlay ing. Guests are always welcome.
Send festive cheer to our troops
MANY people have asked what they should send out to serving soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan this Christmas. ■ Last week we printed an appeal from
Mandy Brennan, of Grindleton, for £10 parcels.
Parcels can be sent direct and organisers
have suggested that goodies, such as biscuits, long-life cakes, dried fruit and nuts, tinned goods, sweets - not those likely to melt in the heat - magazines, cotton socks, moisturiser are all goods which could be considered for the £10 contents. For those wishing to send a parcel direct,
for Iraq the address is: A British Soldier, c/o Next to Tesco’s. Far beyond comparison
JI Branch, HQ MND (SE), Op Telic, BFPO 641. For Afghanistan: c/o Capt. S. Beattie, MBE, S03, JI, HQ Task Force Helmand, Lashkar Gar. BFPO 715. Otherwise, call Mandy on 01200 441551 or e-mail her at:
