www.clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk Festive lights switch off

THE decision to switch off the Christmas lights outside a Clitheroe house has led to a mixed reaction in town. For the past 12

years, the home of Mr and Mrs Jack and Christine Brunker, in Bolland Prospect, has enthralled children and adults as thou sands of bulbs pro vided a spectacle. Members of the

public were invited

to give donations to charity each year and self-employed builder Mr Brunker devoted several months to building and creating the lights extravaganza. In recent years,

the volume of traffic and people process ing past the proper ty has led to com plaints and this year Mr Brunker has decided to call time. • See letters,

Making a child’s dream come true

THE proprietor of a Clitheroe cycle shop has offered to provide a bicycle for this year’s Toy Appeal. John Hargreaves, of A.

E. Hargreaves Cycles in Moor Lane, Clitheroe is donating a child’s bicycle to the appeal run jointly by the Salvation Army and the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times. “It would be great if we

could supply someone with the bicycle they wanted, but did not expect to receive,” said Mr Harg reaves this week. A. E. Hargreaves is cele

brating its 60th anniver sary this year. Started by Mr Arthur

Hargreaves, John’s father, in 1947, the business is something of a one stop shop, with electrical items such as televisons, along side cycles. With a major shift

BAGS and bags of brand new toys for our fourth annual Toy Appeal are starting to pile up. For the next two weeks we will

be continuing to collect brand new gifts for children of all ages which will be given out to local families who would otherwise find themselves struggling dur ing the festive season. Any items for our Toy Appeal,

which is run in conjunction with the Salvation Army in Clitheroe, can be taken either to the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times office in King Street or to the Salvation Army shop in Lower- gate. We also would like to hear

from any families who may need help through this appeal, partic ularly those that we helped through Home Start last year. Names and contact details can

be passed on to us in a number of ways - by tex t in g or ringing Capt. Elizabeth Smith on 0770 9351394,or by e-mailing natal- ie.cox@eastlancsnews.co.uk using the special post box in the Clitheroe Advertiser office or leaving them at the Salvation Army shop. • We also still need the names

of anyone wanting to enjoy some friendship and fellowship on Christmas Day. The Salvation Army and its

volunteer helpers are again organising their annual festive lunch for December 25th. Aimed at people of all ages

who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day, the lunch has proved popular in the past. Although some names have

already been received, Capt Smith says there is still room for plenty more: “I would not want anyone to
