signing BURNLEY goalscoririg legend Andy Payton will be at Shacklctons Gar den Centre in Clithcroc on Saturday signing copies of his Natural Born Claret DVD. Payton is hoping to

raise X‘5,000 for Pendle- sidc Hospice by making a donation from every sale of a limited 2,000-copy re-release of the special look at his prolific career, which features over 100 goals, including all 81 he scored for the Clarets. Priced at £19.99, there

are interviews with Burn ley players past and pres ent, as well as Advertiser sports reporter Chris Bodcn. Payton will be at the Clithcroc Road venue between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday.

success CLITHEROE B’s first home mutch at their new Oakhill College venue produced their best per formance of the season in the Mid-Lancashire Badminton League Third Division. They faced runaway

leaders Next Generation B and earned a cred itable draw. The ladies started

well, with three wins for Jane MacEwun and Sheila Perry. But the home team

were pegged back in the men’s doubles, and achieved just one victory. In the mixed doubles,

Martin Meadows and Julie Pym produced the top performance with three wins. And a win each for the

Tony Bush-MacEwan and Dave Mackcnzie- Pcrry pairings confirmed tile draw. The quality of per

formance was encourag ing for the locals, and showed a big improve ment from the crushing defeat they were subject ed to by the same opposi tion in (he opening game of the season. But the B team lost

(heir unbeaten record in the Blackburn Bad minton League Second Division.when they came up against the youngsters of Cardinals A. In the mixed doubles,

two couples achieved maximum points — Stephen Pym and Perry, along with Mackenzie and Ann Taylor. The men gave the

team the advantage with three out of four wins, including two for Mackenzie and Bush. But the Cardinals’

ladies proved too strong in the remaining games, levelling the match at 8-8 and claiming victory with a superior points tally.

Keeper stars as Saunders strikes

MICKEY Saunders netted his first Clitheroe goal to earn the visitors a hard-earned point at Chorley on Sat urday.

But it was man-of-the-match Paul

Horridge who ensured they kept it. The Blues shot-stopper was in

outstanding form to deny a revi talised Magpies outfit at Victory Park in this UniBond League First Division North derby battle, as he produced several superb saves in a rock-solid display. Clitheroe were under pressure for

the majority of the first half, as Chorley were a different animal to the side that lost 5-1 at Shawbridge last month. Energised by right-sided winger

Mike Eckersley and the shooting boots of Mark Drew and Ashley Parillon, Chorley were gunning for revenge. Add new centre back Liam Coyne

from Warrington Town and goalscor ing midfielder Gavin Lee Ellison from Leigh RMI, and the home side were a handful. Horridge was called on as early as

the fifth minute to get down to his near post to deny a Drew free kick, before Clitheroe had a great chance to open the scoring at the opposite end minutes later. A move between Neil Zarac, Joel

Byrom and Saunders proved the Blues' best of the game, and ended in the latter pulling the ball back for Byrom to blast over from inside the area. Eckersley proved a sprightly dan

ger throughout the first half, and got a shot away at Horridge in the 29th minute that called for another fine save at the foot of the post. A breakaway move with a defence- splitting hall from midfield saw Par-

Action from the Victory Park clash, (s)

illon beat the off-side trap to call Horridge into another exceptional stop, turning the ball behind for a corner. Unfortunately there wasn't a lot

he could do to stop Chorley from scoring from the set piece, as Ellison rose high at the back post to power home a 33rd-minute header. But in first-half injury time, on-

loan Saunders was clinical with a strike from the edge of the area to fire the Blues level. Horridge was called upon again in

the second half by Stephen Burke, before performing acrobatics to pre vent Drew from finding the top cor ner with a well-taken free kick, and from the resulting corner, Coyne ran to the front post to flick his header over the bar.

Surprise defeat

G r in dle lon.....................1 Ke igh le y ......................... 3

CRAVEN League First Division leaders Grindle- ton suffered their first league defeat of the season at the hands of lowly Keighley. The visiting side arrived

manager-less and with a bare starting 11. But they imposed a

humiliating defeat on the villagers, and, as a conse quence, blew the title race wide open. Grindleton did start off

brightly and came close to taking the lead, hitting the woodwork on a couple of occasions. However, it was the visi

tors who took the lead when a cross from the left wing found an unmarked player, who headed homo from six yards out. In the second half

Grindleton went in search of an equaliser, but actual ly found themselves fur ther behind. A corner hit to the far

post found the big centre half, who despatched an unstoppable header into

the roof of the net. Finding themselves in

this unusual position, the home side battled hard but couldn’t find the response needed, and when a third Keighley effort found the back of the net, from a free kick on the edge of the 18- yard box, three points slipped further from their grasp. In a final rally minutes

before the end, the home side did manage to pull a goal back, albeit a consola tion. A long throw was flicked

on for striker Steve Walker to scramble home through a mass of bodies. And as the final whistle

blew, the away side cele brated their shock victory as Grindleton were left to lick their wounds and pick themselves up for their next game a t Cowling, where they hope to get back to winning ways, and get their title charge back on track.

More football on page 25

Burke then beat the Blues' off-side

trap, only for Adam Kozlowski to get goal side and help Horridge to squeeze out the forward, followed shortly after by another well-taken Drew free kick that struck the Clitheroe bar. Clitheroe's best efforts materi

alised midway through the half when Gary Stopforth forced former Blues keeper Peter Collinge to tip a 40- yard strike over the bar, and from the corner, Zarac headed over a Byrom delivery. Paul Fildes and Sam Heap came

on to freshen up Clitheroe’s attack towards the end, and Fildes hit a solid strike at Collinge, but a late goal would have been very hard on an impressive Chorley performance.

Thrilling victory

Colne Utd Re se rv es___•/ Riinini/lon Reserves . . .5 A HAT-TRICK from Carter was almost overshad owed by a marvellous Colne comeback. Leading 4-0 at the inter

val, Rimington were seem ingly cruising towards victo

ry- But their visitors almost

completed a sensational turnaround, only to fall just short. Playing away from home

to last year’s runners-up was always going to be a difficult game. Captain Anderson lost

the toss, but the Colne skip per decided to kick into the wind, and this strange deci sion ultimately led to Colne’s downfall. Rimington started bright

ly and it wasn’t long before the Colne keeper was in action, saving well from McTear. But minutes later, Carter

played a delicate through ball to McTear, and his cross found Carter in space to tap in at the far post. And it wasn’t long before Rimington’s lead was dou

bled, with Leach’s cross met by Carter who slid into an empty net. On the half hour mark,

Carter grabbed his third after being unselfishly fed by McTear. And just before the break,

Dearden played in Carter, and after he was beaten to the ball by the keeper, Leach tapped home the rebound. Rimington made three

changes at half-time, but the second half was always going to be difficult, with Rimington against the wind. It was not long before

Colne pulled one back when a swirling effort from 30 yards gave Anderson no chance, and it was 4-2 when the striker turned in a cor ner. It was soon 4-3 thanks to

another defensive mistake, but at the other end, after McLean’s penalty was tipped round the post, he made amends by forcing in the resulting comer. Colne did manage to get

another back, leading to a tense finish, but Rimington held on.

SAM Cherry starred as Wolves came unstuck against their close rivals. Wilpshire were ahead

after Cherry’s unfortunate own goal, in wet conditions at Pleckgate. Wolves then had a great

chance to equalise after good work from Ryan Duplessis, only to see Luke Jackson's effort sail over the bar. A good header into the

top corner and two late goals saw Wilpshire with a hard-earned lead at the interval. Wolves came out in the

second half and dominated play, and were rewarded when Jack Parkinson was felled in the box and calm ly slotted home the penal

ty. Lammack Juniors ....3 Wolves Under 7 s ............1 CLITHEROE came up against a well-organised Lammack side and despite their best efforts their unbeaten run came to an end. Jamie Thornber was

magnificent in defence but he could do nothing to stop the Wolves going 2-0 down at half-time. The Wolves pulled a

goal back through Matthew King, but as they pushed to g e t the equaliser Lammack broke away to win the game. The Wolves have a

chance for revenge on Sun day when they entertain Lammack.

scored by Tom Rigby and Soorya Silva, while Jack Blackwell took the man-of- the-match award. Langho Under 13s . . . .4 Sporting A th le t ic ......... 0 LANGHO maintained their impressive recent home form to see off spirit ed opposition. Following the decision

to switch the game from Northcote to Pleckgate, the locals started the bet ter and scored twice early on.

The first came following

some intricate play between Daniel Holden- Grimshaw and Joseph Fourie, as the latter drilled the ball home. And the second, scored again by Fourie, saw him

follow up a rebound in the area. Two further goals after

the break by Holden- Grimshaw and Edward James capped an impres sive performance.

quality football saw almost the entire game played in Celtic’s half. And it was captain Zak

longer before he opened his account, and a few minutes later he extended the lead with his second. Nikolai Petriaho hit a

powerful left foot strike past the keeper, before Mort completed his hat- trick by slipping the ball under the keeper. Callum Sykora made it

6-0 at the break, and Mort completed his individual tally just after the restart. George Banks netted

two superb goals in as many minutes, before a Chris Bentley brace com pleted the scoring.

their side for the last few weeks, has proved costly on numerous occasions, and nearly did for them again in this match. Clitheroe were 16-0 to the good

at the break. They scored after a protracted

series of driving mauls ended up over the line, Kiwi loose forward Deano coming up with the ball and claiming the try. The extras were safely bagged

by Martin Lafranceschina, who was on target again shortly after wards with a penalty. After the turn round, condi

it began to be difficult to distin guish the two teams from one another, as Chorley’s mono chrome black and white uniform turned, well, to black. Clitheroe's fiery maroon and

gold was almost extinguished from view, except for one or two of the three-quarters who weren't just as keen on the mud larks. Not only was the pitch getting

worse, so was Clitheroe's concen tration. Chorley came storming back

and scored two quick tries at the beginning of the half to suddenly put Clitheroe behind for the first time in the game. With 20 minutes to go, Clitheroe threw everything at the

Chorley line, but the home defence was up to the task time and again. Clitheroe went over the line

twice, but they just couldn't get the ball to ground. But as time seemed to be slip

ping away, Chorley at last gave away a kickable penalty which Lafranceschina coolly converted. In the last few minutes, Chor

ley roared back looking for points, but some tremendous scrambling defence kept them out for a mem orable victory. On Saturday in-form Camforth

are the visitors, and they will be looking to avenge their early-sea- son reverse at the hands of the Lit- tlemoor men (kick-off 2-30 p.m.).
