I
never seen a professional mani curist.
They are otherwise engaged -
in the garden, washing up, operat ing a computer keyboard. They are brittle, a little bit bitten - in fact, a perfect example of bad nail man agement. With just two hours before my
"nail assessment" at the York Street Clinic, Clitheroe, the reali sation dawned that the man I was due to meet had tended to the nails of Joan Collins, Kate Moss and Shirley Bassey! And three days before my
appointment, two already broken nails suffered more disasters and had to be filed down. Bradford-born Leighton began
his working life as a truck driver. Today he is recognised as an
international manicurist's guru and he is passionate about nails. We are talking real nails here
and not the false variety. "I know how vital it is they look
groomed in today's society," he says.
Whoops. I have a feeling both
he and I are in for an interesting hour.
And so it was. Leighton's visit to York Street
Clinic was in celebration of it becoming an official stockist and outlet for the award-winning Leighton Denny products. It is rare that a salon is accredited out side cities and large towns, but, as we know, the Ribble Valley is that kind of place! Having driven from London, he was a little late in arriving. By the

time he did, my nails were hav ing a party! I had been whisked upstairs, my hands plunged into diamond skin-like rejuvenating hand and nail scrub, washed, fluffed and buffed, and then nails filed and polished in readiness for the final coat. Whether it was chocoholic or
forbidden territory I'm not too sure, but they looked good enough to eat. My daughter was convinced they were false and they were still brilliantly shiny several days later. Deighton himself proved more
fascinating than my nails. After leaving school in Bradford, he worked for a family temp agency,
hence the truck driving. It was good money at the time, he recalls. However, his ambition was to
work with people in a salon, but hairdressing did not appeal. Dur ing a trip to the USA with his mother in 1991, he watched a manicurist at work and became fascinated by nails, deciding to make it his career. He trained in 1991-2, went mobile and then worked on US-based cruise lin ers to fine tune his craft and gain experience. On his return in 1993; he opened his first salon in Brad ford. He moved to London in 1998 to open his second, in
Marylebone High Street, and extended his career into session and celebrity work. He won British Nail Technician
of the Year in 2001,2002,2003 and 2004, when he was voted into Hall of Fame and became a judge. Extremely proud of his awards, he brought them to Clitheroe, carefully wrapped - in football socks! Staff at the York Street Clinic
were eager to meet and talk to him. His opinions and expertise are eagerly sought by other pro fessionals, and he is a regular contributor and columnist in trade publications.
. Having worked with leading
brands, in June, 2005, he took the plunge and launched his own, which he says is priced competi tively to enable everyone to enjoy using his products. Other than the Italian packaging, his products are sourced and produced in the UK. Not surprisingly, the clinic was
busy on the night of his visit, with many of the Valley's celebri ties calling in to meet this unas suming Yorkshire nail hero. His visit, they no doubt felt,
was all to brief. For a couple of hours after arriving, off he disap peared - back to London in preparation for a morning photo shoot with magazine Harper's Bazaar!
