Super racecourse’ is still moving forward
EXCLUSIVE by Faiza Afzaal
PLANS for the world’s first £100m. “super racecourse” to be built on land between Simon- stone and Altham are on track. Rumours that one of the devel
opers involved in the massive proj ect has pulled out and th a t the pro posals for the state-of-the-art facil ity are “dead and b u r ied ” have been quashed. In s tead , racing supremo the
Marquess of Zetland, who is the consortium’s representative in this country, stresses that the proposals are very much moving ahead and talks with local landowners should start in the New Year. At a public meeting in Read ear
lier this year, racecourse chiefs pre dicted that plans would be ready at the s ta r t of 2008, but due to the sudden death of one of the poten tial investors in July, the scheme has suffered a “minor” setback. Speaking exclusively to the
Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, Lord Zetland declared tha t despite this exciting times lie ahead.
“We have finally put together
what we believe to be almost the perfect se t of investors who all believe wholeheartedly in what we are trying to achieve,” he comment ed.
“We have lost one or two along
the way for all sorts of reasons, including one very unfortunate death. “There is absolutely no truth in
the rumour th a t one of our investors has pulled out. “I am usually widely optimistic
with my forecasts, but I shall be very disappointed indeed if we are not ready to proceed with our 25- month development programme in the New Year. “This will consist of a huge
amount of research into the pro posed racecourse and, until that is completed, neither we nor anyone else will know what the end product may be. “One of our first priorities is to
talk to the freehold landowners on site.
“All the rest will come out in the
wash as our studies progress.” No plans have as yet been sub
mitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council’s planning department, but if given the go-ahead, the race course is to be built on 371 acres of land between the Ribble Valley and Hyndburn, and is expected to attract up to 30,000 racegoers per meeting. I t is understood advanced tech
nology will be used to create a spe cial grass track suitable for staging flat racing during the summer and jump racing during the winter. In addition, a floodlit track will
enable people to experience the thrills of evening racing. A five-star hotel, a theme park, a
casino, a limited retail develop ment, stabling, an equestrian train ing centre and a centre of sporting excellence are also planned - pro viding all-year-round leisure and educational development for race goers and non-racegoers alike. Lord Zetland added: “This is a
very big concept and a very long term project and nothing will hap pen in a rush.” • For a breakdown of previous
