Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, August 25th, 2005 9 m Free advice for sheep producers
SHEEP producers in the Ribble Valley could benefit from a free event at Clitheroe Auction Mart today. The Market Selection Event is being
I
hosted by EBLEX,’the English Beef and Lamb Executive, as part of its Better Returns Programme. It will provide expert advice on lamb selection and how to avoid extra production costs created by over-fin ishing lambs, plus handling demonstra tions with live sheep.
The free event will start at 6 p.m. with
the introduction given by Clitheroe auc tioneer John Swingler. The discussion and demonstration will cover the key handling points that help producers make reliable assessments of a lamb's fat and conforma tion classification and make better deci sions when selecting lambs that are ready for slaughter. These principles will be sup ported by a butchery demonstration, cour tesy of local butcher Andrew Seed, which
compares the waste difference between over-fat and lean lambs. To reserve your free place at this event,
call Clitheroe Mart on 01200 423325 or email
info@auctionmart.co.uk. Attendees will also be able to pick up free copies of EBLEX publications including the Target Lamb Selection for Better Returns manual and the more recent addition to the series Target Lamb Management for Better Returns manual.

A “SLOW DOWN” plea has been issued by the North West Air Ambu lance after its paramedics attended three fatal road accidents in a weekend. The NWAA is urging drivers to
watch their speed and drive consider ately in a bid to avoid further tragedy on the region’s roads. Lynda Brislin, charity chief execu
tive of the NWAA, said: "The summer is our busiest time, especially August as there is a lot more traffic on the main roads and motorways. Everyone is keen to get to their destination as quickly as possible, but we are urging all drivers to stick to the speed limit and drive ivith consideration. "Any delays and tailbacks are usually
down.to the sheer volume of traffic or an incident. For those sitting in the queue there is nothing that can be done, so there is no point getting frustrated and then thinking you can make up on the time lost by driving a bit faster when the roads are clear. I t makes absolutely no sense as it is more impor tant you get there in one piece." The N WAA ireceives no mainstream
funding, relying solely on the generosity of businesses and the people of the North West. I t costs £1 million per year to keep the Air Ambulance flying seven days a week, 365 days a year. Donations can be made by ringing 08005874570.
