Mushtaq (Pakistan), Azhar Mahmood (Pak istan) and Narendra Hir- wani (India), Kumar Dharmasena (Sri Lanka) are just a few of the big names that svill be on show. The event, which is being

co-sponsored by Blackburn Wanderers CC and P.C. Bishop Electricals, promis es to include some ferocious hitting with such an array of international talent on display. There will also be an

opportunity for members of the public to face the bowling of Saqlain Mush taq and try to pick his "Doosra". The match gets under

way at 1 p.m. and specta tors are advised to arrive in good time as a large crowd is expected.

Community cricket day big success

THE Community Cham pions Fund-supported Community Cricket Day, held at Clitheroe Cricket Club recently, proved a roaring success. The event brought

together families of all faith, race and background for an afternoon of enter taining and competitive 6- a-side cricket. While the adults com

peted on the field, children were kept amused by a bouncy castle, cricket coaching and an entertain- er.The proceedings con cluded with a presentation to all participants followed by a meal for all a t The Balti Spice. Event organiser Farouk

Hussain hailed the day a success: "It was a wonder ful afternoon of family fun. It was terrific to see young and old enjoying each oth ers company and interact ing with one another in a respectful and toleran t manner regardless of faith or race differences. “Hopefully we can build

on this positive display and help to create a more

understanding society for all to live in. “This has once again

proved that the majority of people in this town are decent, good minded folk who do not regard race or faith as a barrier to interac

tion and a more cohesive town. ‘I would like to offer my manks to The Community

Champions Fund for mak ing today possible."

Whalley edge derby day

WHALLEY won their derby with Ribblesdale Wanderers at Church Meadow on Saturday by 26 runs. Wanderers were never

really up with the run ra te in the second innings, and the accurate bowling of Simon Gorton (4-41), Ben Dowling (3- 21) and David O’Neill (2-74) put paid to their hopes of passing the tar get set by Whalley of 184-9. The Station Road side

won the toss and elected to b a t, with Martin Davies and Lee Kearsley putting on just 10 for the first wicket. However, after Kears

ley was bowled by Liam Gidlow for eight, captain Davies progressed to top

score with 79, including nine fours and two sixes, alngside professional Phil Thornton (24, of which 20 came in boundaries), Alex Whelan (0) and Richard Palmer (38), before he was cleaned out by Terry Braithwaite at 157-4. The remainder of the

order struggled to put up much resistance as Braithwaite finished with 4-44, while Ribbles dale professional Gerard De Bruin returned 4-60. In reply, wickets fell at

regular intervals. The highest stand was

only 27, shared by David Braithwaite (27 not out) and captain Martin Brig gs (27), who was caught by Andy Pratt off Simon Gorton.

The next best score

was 24 from Craig Hall, followed Gary Hunt (14), De Bruin (17) and Andy King (15). If this rate had contin

ued in the late order. Wanderers might have sneaked victory, unfortu nately Stuart Totter and Terry Braithwaite both went without score, and Marcus Pratt managed just two runs as Wander ers finished on 158-9 from their 45 overs. This weekend’s double

header see Whalley at home to Baxenden on Saturday, and Settle on Sunday, while Ribbles dale are also a t home both

days to

Barnoldswick on Satur day, and derby opponents Clitheroe on Sunday.

Cliatburn suffer setback

CHATBURN suffered a 77-run defeat at Airedale on Saturday. The locals restricted

the Yorkshire side to 182- 8, with Stephen Booth and Andy Booth taking two wickets each. Russell Braithwaite,

Rod Booth and Stuart Draycott were also among the wickets. In reply, Chatburn

could not match the Bradford Road side with the bat as they fell all out for 105. Andy Booth made the

best effort with the bat as he scored 31, including

four boundaries and a six, with Stephen Booth making 18. CHATBURN seconds beat Cullingworth by one wicket in a nail-biting finish. Cullingworth elected

to bat first and reached 50 before losing their first wicket. This heralded a major

collapse as they were bowled out for 107. Paul Shorrock (5-59)

and Geoff Lambert (4- 34) bowled unchanged throughout the innings. In reply, Rob Devine (21) and Andy Lambert

(21) scored runs, but the Chatburn innings col lapsed to 73-8. Shorrock and Lambert

steadied the ship until the former was out for 10 with five runs still required. Richard Briscoe then

entered the proceedings, and after several hair- raising moments with the scores tied, Briscoe hit the winning run much to the jubilation of his team mates. Geoff Lambert had a

match-winning perform ance of 23 not out.

CHAMPIONS Rimington inflicted a six-wicket defeat on Calderstones in the penultimate round of Clitheroe and Dis

trict Cricket League games. Chipping A confirmed their second

place as Alex Hough hit an unbeaten 50 in their 58-run win over Ramhlere.

Champions maintain their form Riverside were again unable to raise a

team, handing Low Moor a walkover win.

Results Calderstones 149 all out, Rimington

150-4; Chipping Ramblers 104-7, Chip ping A 162-4.

Earby, and at Padiham on Sunday, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.

they deserved, and lost on countback hav ing lost eight wickets to Harwood’s five, having seen both sides rack up identical tallies of 158 off 20 overs. Professional for the day was Read old

A FRANTIC end saw Clitheroe somehow contrive to tie their match at Padi ham. The home side required 13

runs for victory off the final two overs, and eight off the final six deliveries. That became four off the

final two balls, but a dot ball and a wide from Farook Butt meant they then need ed three off the final ball. Butt’s attempt to bowl a

slower ball backfired, and after bouncing over the head of wicket keeper Simon Coulter, the batsmen man aged to scamper the two runs required to tie the game. Clitheroe must have felt

they had thrown away the chance to go top of the table, as Settle were losing at Cher ry Tree. But their is just one point

separating the top two, and with Barnoldswick only a further two adrift, this is turning into an intriguing title battle. Padiham themselves must

have thought they were in the driving seat, after a opening century partnership

between professional Kasif Siddique and Michael Hawke. The former was eventual

ly removed, clean-bowled by Mark Hargreaves for 64, having put on 127 with Hawke adding nine fours and one sue. A quickfire 27 from Umar

Saddique put the home side firmly in the box seat, but the tide began to turn when he was bowled by Butt. Anthony Hall (9) and

Naeem Ashraf (3) both fell in quick succession as Clitheroe begun to sense vic tory, and they must have thought they were on top going into the last two overs. But Padiham did just

enough to grab three points from the game, equalling the visitors’ first innings total of 232. Of that, it was once again

paid man Shahid Nawaz who led the show with a sub lime knock of 116. After winning the toss and

electing to bat first, Nawaz and Neil Bolton set about posting a decent total. Unfortunately, the part nership yielded just two runs

as the latter was removed for a duck, caught by Andrew Robinson off Siddique. Namesake Mark (22) and

Naeem Ashraf (45) were both in the runs alongside the pro, who smashed 14 boundaries and five sixes in his innings. His 50 arrived in 73 min

utes, while his second half century was added in just over half an hour! The \vicket of Neil Bolton

was the first of Siddique’s 4- 98 as he also scooped Mark Bolton, Simon Coulter (3) and Chris Musson (0). Umar Saddique (3-70)

took three equally important wickets in Nawaz, Ashraf and Farook Butt (20), with Ashraf hitting seven bound aries and a six. But it proved to be not

enough to send Clitheroe top of the table, as they head into this weekend’s double header. Edenfield travel to Chat

burn Road on Saturday, before the eagerly anticipat ed local derby at Ribblesdale Wanderers 24 hours later (wickets pitched l-30 p.m.).
