Youngsters learn to cycle safely

YEAR 6 pupils at St Mary’s Primary School in Mellor, took part in a six-week cycling course, which they all completed successful!}’; The course named “Pass

port to Safer Cycling” was run by the Lancashire Road Safety Team along with par ent volunteers, and was aimed a t teaching the chil dren how to be aware of their surroundings, and how to stay stafe while on the roads. Over the six weeks, the

)

children took on three mod ules to test their cycling pro ficiency. The firs t module was

taken in the classroom, and taught the children about the dangers of busy roads, and how to keep their bicy cles safe and clean. Modules two and three

were practical modules to teach the children how to turn from major and minor junctions, showing them how to move safely and effectively.

This final module gave the

children real life situations in which they had to show they could implement their new found skills. The children thoroughly

enjoyed the course and at the end, they were all pre sented with cycling certifi cates to celebrate th e ir achievement. Pictured is Mellor Prima

ry School pupil Rose (11) standing with her classmates for the Cycling Proficiency presentation. (G110705/1)

Gamble cash for children’s charity

A CHARITY casino night is to take place to bring more sunshine into the lives of sick, disabled and disadvantaged children in the Ribble Valley. The fund-raising event will take place

on September 9th, at the Shireburn Arms Hotel, Hurst Green, and follows the success of a campaign launched a year ago to open a branch of the Variety Club of Great Britain in the area. The campaign was launched by gener

ous Highmoor Park resident, Mr Peter Dowdy (58), pictured, who decided to form the branch so money raised by the charity’s supporters in the borough would stay in the area. Mr Dowdy, who is the managing

director of Blackburn-based TrendLine Office Interiors, called on business folk to back plans to set up a branch of the deserrnng club. Formed more than half a century ago,

the national charity raises money for holidays and Sunshine coaches to help sick, disabled and disadvantaged chil dren across the countr}’ and abroad. The organisation, which boasts the

likes of Prince Charles, the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince .Andrew as mem bers, has provided around 4,000 Sun shine coaches to schools and institutions and with them the gift of freedom and mobility. Mr Dowdy himself supported the

North West branch of the famous club for 10 years, but yearned to improve the quality of life of local children, who through no fault of their own are less for tunate than others. He has taken the role of branch chair

man of the new Ribble Valley club and has high hopes that the first of the many fund-raising events will increase aware ness of the club. He commented: “The casino night

will give local people a chance to find out what the Variety Club is all about and at the same time, raise money for sick, disadvantaged and disabled children. For the past year, I have been working alongside Ribble Valley people in setting up the branch, which w’ill enable local youngsters to cash in on the benefits.” Meanwhile, in addition to the casino

night, other forthcoming fund-raising events include a pro-celebrity “fo.xes and rabbits” competition, where celebrities and amateur golfers will be seen teeing off in the borough for charity. The casino night will start at 7-30

p.m. with tickets priced at £20 each. The price includes live music, buffet and an auction. Anyone requiring further information or tickets for the casino night is asked to call Mr Dow’dy on 01200 429451, or committee member Mr Steve Alcock, at the Shireburn Arms Hotel, on 01254 826518.

sw'ick's Community Arts Group, whose spokesman, David Whipp, said: '"The balloon festival has become popular with locals, bal loonists and visitors. "We're hoping this year's move

to the bank holiday w’eekend will allow the event to grow even more. Saturday evening’s entertainment promises to be an outstanding free family friendly activity. We hope to attract thousands of visitors." Organisers are also alerting

local land and livestock owners to the possibility of balloons and also the firework display, due to start

at 9-30 p.m. on Saturday. Subject to weather conditions, balloon launches with take place around 6-30 a.m. and 6-30 p.m. at the park or nearby launch sites. Besides the ballooning activi
