AFTER last year’s washout, organisers of Ribble Valley Vintage Club’s annual rally were praying for fine weather to make this year’s event a success. All their prayers were

answered when blue skies and bright sunshine brought crowds flocking in their thousands to the show field off the A59 at Sawley Brow on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors were rewarded

with the biggest and best rally in the 17-year history of the event, with exhibitors travelling from

far and wide. The endless list of exhibits included 250 vintage, classic and distinctive cars, 140 trac tors, 70 motorbikes, 45 military vehicles, 95 com mercials, 66 stationary engines, 30 bicycles, two large steam engines, three miniature steam engines and four street organs! Other attractions

included various stalls, games and refreshments spread across the bustling field, which had been pre

pared by a hardworking team of around 30 enthu siasts drawn from the Rib ble Valley club’s member ship. One of the rally organis

ers, Rod Gregg, said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. We just wanted everyone to come and participate and enjoy themselves, and th a t’s what they did.” He thanked everyone

involved in organising the event, particularly the Burnley Squadron of the Air Training Corps, for marshalling the car park ing, and the Clitheroe St John Ambulance for their

watchful presence on the field.

Money raised over the

weekend will help to cover the £6,000 loss suffered by the club last year when it had to cancel the rally at short notice after torren tial rain made the field waterlogged. The club also makes regular donations to local charities and wor thy causes from the money it raises through its annual rally and other events. Anyone wanting to

know more about the Rib ble Valley Vintage Club can telephone its chair man, Bill Holden, on 01254 878522.

THE pretty village of Whal ley is endowed with many hidden treasures. Offering a fascinating array of

businesses, tourism, leisure, shops and perfect historic fea tures, Whalley has it all. Of course, the river, hills, woodland and open space all add to the attraction. Located four miles from the

bustling town of Clitheroe, the village is set on the banks of the beautiful River Calder. Visitors cannot fail to be impressed by this gem of a place, for wherev er you stand in Whalley you are only a short distance away from something of interest. One of the best-known build

ings is Whalley Abbey. It took monks from 1296 until 1400 to complete it. Although the actual abbey is in ruins, there are still traces of stables, offices, a clois ter, dormitory and a kitchen. Since January, the building has been treated to a £lm. revival plan. The refurbishment pro gramme, which includes revamping the 14th Century

abbey itself, its historic retreat house and conference centre, is near completion. Whalley Abbey is full of sur

prises and attracts hundreds of visitors each and every year. It is an ideal place for a family pic nic on a summer’s day and visi tors also get a chance to visit a gift shop and tea room. Once you have explored the

abbey, the adjacent medieval church is well worth a visit. The Parish Church of St Mary and All Saints stands between the abbey ruins and the village. There has been a church here

since 628AD. Monks arrived in 1296 and stayed until the time of the dissolution in 1537, when the Abbot, John Parsley, was hanged on the scaffold at Lan caster. The church has an air of quiet and calm about it with 15th Century stalls originally from the abbey, and its east win dow dedicated to local families, including the Asshetons and the De Lacys.
