Bill still pedalling across Germany

CLITHEROE estate agent Bill Honeywell is pedalling his way through Germany to Lemvig for charity. Mr Honeyivell (pictured right) is

raising money for the Christie Hos pital, Manchester, and Multiple Sclerosis Society and his current sponsorship stands at £2,596. He has been sending regular bul

V ,

letins of his progress to brother-in- law Alan Breckell. Here, we print extracts from

them. Friday, August 19th Bill is up and a t it! Today he

travelled 139km from Rotterdam to Egmond aan den Hoef. His route took him via Hook of Holland, Zandvoort, Haarlem and Ljmuiden. He reports th a t he has had a

good day with only one minor detour due to an incorrect map (at least that’s his story!). The weath er let him down this afternoon, with very heavy rain, but the fore cast for the weekend is for sunshine and 16 degrees C. Monday, Augusf 22nd Bill has arrived a t the German

border tonight after covering 121kms and is staying at Nieuweschans overnight. This means th a t he is bang on his planned schedule. He reports tha t the going was

better today. Yesterday there was a wind in his face most of the way, which made the going tough.

Scenery was very varied, cycling through locks, industrial sites, ghost towns and vast polders which, according to my dictionary, are areas of land which have been reclaimed from the sea. Tuesday, August 23rd Bill is on schedule, having

reached Greetsiel and cycled 106km today. He says it has been tough with a force six gale in his face all day and, to add insult to injury, it has rained this afternoon! However, all is not doom and

gloom. He says he has found a splendid overnight stop at a restau rant with rooms for a mere pit tance. When I spoke to him he was really looking forward to a big steak with all the trimmings although he has admitted to me that he does not speak German, so he may end up with braatwurst! He is on schedule and tomorrow’s

route should take him to Esens which is a distance of some 85 km We would like to thank everyone

who has contributed to his sponsor ship to-date. Details of how to donate are on the website: www.honeywell.co.uk

Society taking to stage with ‘Crazy’ show

AN all-singing, all-dancing musical comedy, “Crazy for You”,is Clitheroe Parish Church Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society’s next production. Enrolment for the show is taking

place a t the St Mary’s Centre on Tuesday at 7-30 p.m. “Crazy for You”, with music and

lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, is packed with well-known num

bers, including “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Embraceable You,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Tonight’s the Night,” “Nice Work if You Can Get It,” “They Can’t Take that Away from Me” and many more. The show’s director is Howard

Raw, one of the top directors in the North. At the enrolment session, he will give a resume of the show and the society’s pianist/chorus

master, Philip Dobson, will play a selection of the songs. The show’s musical director is

Roger Purcell and choreographer Ann Grogan. A warm welcome will be extend

ed to all past and present and new members. Like all amateur soci eties, men are in demand! - Inquiries to Samantha Smith: 01200 429526.

“STUNNING and fantastic” were the words used to describe Read Primary School’s production of “The Sound of Music”. Mrs Joyce Shaw, the head of

Read Primary School, sang the praises of the children, expressing her pride in such a wonderful and sparkling production. The show was directed by Mrs

Kim Raynor, the music co-ordina- tor of the school, and performed by

the school choir in the school’s main hall. A performance for the school was given on Tuesday afternoon and then there were two shows for parents on Wednesday afternoon and evening. Costumes were made by the par

ents and a wonderful Alpine scene had been sketched on to the school’s modular stage by Mrs Duncombe. Katy Wlodarczyk gave a stun

ning performance as Maria, oppo site Sammuel Littely and Lucy Tuley, who played Captain von Trapp and Baroness Scroda.

Emily Campbell, a past pupil of

the school, offered her services to the choir, attending school every Tuesday evening to help prepare for the show. Mrs Shaw said: “I am so proud of

all the students involved in the pro duction. They are all so talented and it was lovely that Emily could come back and share this great achievement with the children.” Pictured is the choir, ready to per

form the musical “The Sound of Music.”
