YOU can have a back-to-back fun- packed Bank Holiday weekend with out leaving East Lancashire. The area is steeped in history, but also
boasts some amazing attractions so there is no need to be bored this weekend. There is a whole host of activities from
the great outdoors and heritage to live music and shopping. Everyone will be able to find something
that interests them and the bonus is that it will not involve too much travelling or getting caught up in Bank Holiday traf fic.
And most of the activities in the Kib
ble Valley, Burnley, and Pendle area are not dependant on sunshine, so you can plan your weekend without waiting to see if the skies are going to be clear. If you like good music, then Colne is
the place to be for the whole of the Bank Holiday. It is playing host to the 16th Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival featuring performances from some of the most high-profile stars including Kim Simmonds, Maggie Bell, The Jive Aces, Lightnin' Willie and the Poorboys and Little Charlie and The Night Cats. Or if you fancy shopping until you
drop, there is an array of shops on offer across the three boroughs with market stalls and small family-run stores to the big high street names. The summer sales are still on, so there are bargains to be had! But if you don’t want to trawl around
the shops, why not immerse yourself in the area’s heritage by visiting such gems as Clitheroe Castle, Towneley Hail, Gawthorpe Hall, Pendle Heritage Centre ■ or Wycoller Hall or taking a stroll around some of the area’s picturesque villages such as Downham, Waddington, Ribch- ester or W^iswell. Or for a breath of fresh air, countryside
is never far aw'ay. There is the imposing Pendle Hill with its link to the Pendle Witches, Boulsworth Hill, Weets Hill, the extensive Towneley Park, the peace ful grounds of Gawthorpe Hall, Queens Park and Wycoller Country Park. You could even take a trip on the miniature railway in Thompson Park. And when you have exhausted yourself, there is a raft of pubs, cafes and restaurants, selling a cornucopia of different foods and drink, to relax and unwind in. Just remember, you don’t have to trav el far to have fun this Bank Holiday.
Places of interest O Clitheroe Castle and Keep is a
prominent landmark with several claims to fame. It is one of the oldest buildings in Lancashire, it may be the smallest keep in England and it is the only remaining castle in Lancashire which had a Royalist garrison during the Civil War. It is believed that the Castle was built by Robert de Lacy in 1186 to house and pro tect the administrative centre of his vast estate. ® Whalley Abbey lies besides the ruins
of the 14th Century Cistercian Abbey. Steeped in history, the adjacent medieval church has three Celtic Scandinavian crosses in its churchyard, which date back to the 9th and 11th Centuries. There is a visitors’ centre, gift shop and tea room.
O Towneley Hall and Park is the jewel
in Burnley’s crown and is starting to be noticed on a national level as it recently provided the backdrop for the BBC peri od drama “Casanova”. The hall dates back to the 14th Century and visitors can see the Regency room, once used by the 'Towneley family, and look at the collec tions in the art gallery. There is also the Museum of Local History. O Pendle Heritage Centre incorporates

plate the legend of the Pendle Witches. In 1612, accusations of witchcraft were levied against several families in the villages around Pendle Hill and these women - Old Chattox, Alice Device, Alice Nutter and Old Mother Demdike - were tried and found guilty before being hanged on the gallows at Lancaster. 9 The Mary Towneley Loop (part of the
Pennine Bridleway) is a 44-miIe circular route taking you through beautiful scenery from Extwistle Moor, Deerplay Moor, the Long Causeway and Hurstwood Reservoir. The trail passes through Holme Chapel and across the Cliviger Gorge, overlooking
