Big-spenders humble Clitheroe at Highbury

By Adrian Capstick

Flceltroud Toini....... I Clilhcrue................0 SOME might say that Fleetwood Town and Mossley fans have a lot in common. Both clubs have gained

promotion in the last two years from the North West Counties, both are renowned for their vocal heckling and hostility to away fans, and now both

. have comprehensibly hum- bled their old rivals Clitheroe in the UniBond League. Last season the Blues

were ripped apart 5-0 by Mossley in their first encounter at this level, and this game against the newly-promoted NWCFL First Division champions was almost a carbon copy. Clitheroe, lining up the

same way they did Satur day, had no answer in any area as the speed at which Fleetwood attacked, and the space that was given to them, made it look all too easy tor the seaside outfit.

lar circumstances to the one the Blues conceded on Saturday, only this time they couldn’t bounce back. Straight from the kick

off, a weak shot from expe rienced former Football League campaigner Ian Stevens was deflected past a stunned Peter Collinge to see the locals on the back foot from the start. This quickness of play

Sargeson shot on goal was gobbled up by the Town keeper, the home side went straight down the other end, and through a lack of marking, the Blues were caught napping, allowing Stevens to net his second with ease. Yellow cards also came

After a weak Craig

was no one-off though, as Fleetwood’s Nathan Pond, Stevens and Darren Hall, supplied by whippy wing men Stuart Beech and for mer Burnley reserve mid fielder Joe Booth, got in behind the Blues midfield and gave Clitheroe’s unac customed defence no end of problems. The locals were able to

pass the ball among them selves when they got it, but they were not direct enough in their approach to goal. And when they lost the ball, they didn’t look like they’d get it back. Tackles were few and far

between, but the second goal on eight minutes was made inexcusably easy, and came as a bigger surprise than the first.

no one on the end of them, and as good as he is at making a good delivery, he seldom used the full wing, attacking the back line as an orthodox right winger should do. So with no luck in front

Clitheroe’s wayCollinge was forced to bring one of the forward line down on the edge of the area, and left back Ben Johnson was booked tor a two-footed challenge in a similar situa tion as frustration took

hold. Clitheroe’s only real

attempt on goal came just before half-time when Sargeson ted Tony Evans, who forced a low save out of Town’s Andy Banks. After the break, after

both teams had waited five minutes for the referee to return to the pitch, the game continued in a similar vein, although the inclu sion of Sean White on the left wing showed promise only to no reward. Likewise, Sargeson deliv

ered some excellent balls into the box, but there was

of goal, further misery was heaped on the locals in the 66th minute when Fleet- wood captain Steve Macauley - a veteran of almost 400 Football League games - leapt above everyone at the back post to nod home Beech’s corner. But the fourth was the

most crushing when on the break away left-back Lee Pryer was left wide open and allowed acres of space to run untroubled off the left wing and fire past Collinge. It is just hoped that this

is a one-off and Fleetwood, like Mossley last season, are the Blues bogey side this term, because if Moss- ley’s 7-0 win over Ossett Albion on Saturday is any thing to go by, it is going to be a long season for the Blues.

Promising opening show By Adrian Capstick

Clilheroe............... 2 Brigg Town ............ 2 SATURDAY marked a new era at- Clitheroe. And boss Tommy Law-

fH -

son could be pleased with a promising display in this entertaining draw.

■ Seven players were handed their competitive debut for the club, with strikers MikeAVolsten- holme and Tony Evans marking their bows with goals. The Blues came from a

goal down to lead at the break, only to ship an unfortunate second in the second half. Brigg conjured up a

shock second minute strike from Simon Roach, but Clitheroe’s powers of recovery made a refresh ing change. Last season when the

Blues went a goal down, they struggled to get back up, but they quickly bounced back after Roach’s opportunist vol ley, fed by a ricochet off Russell Clark, found its way past Peter Collinge in the Clitheroe goal. Evans tested the visit-

(■»

tipped the dipping ball over the bar. However, the second

half saw very little action go in the Blues’ favour and was reminiscent of last season. Brigg came out and

applied pressure on the. locals, which in fairness Clitheroe controlled until the 64th minute. The equaliser came

EQUALISER: Mike Wolstcnholme lurns (he ball home

ing keeper in the 18th minute, but it was his strike partner, 6ft 2ins Wolstenholme who found the net first, three minutes later. The move originated

from a throw in delivered to the feet of the new man by the weaving efforts of Paul Stansfield. Then just seven minutes

later, Evans got in on the act and made it 2-1 when he latched onto a beauti- fully-xveighted through ball from right-back Ian Kearney. The 18-year-old forward

took the ball down with the outside of his right

boot, while jostling for position between the two Brigg centre backs, and in a flash his half volley was in the back of the net. Both Kearney and

Evans are on loan from Southport, and featured tor manager Tommy Law- son at Prescot Cables last season, but this move was beyond their teenage

years. And it could very near

ly have been 3-1 going into half-time as a shot from Ben Johnson took a deflection off a Brigg defender, only to be denied by the agility of Brigg keeper Damien Steer, who

from a hopeful right-wing high ball to the back post which beat Collinge, bounced back into the six- yard box and was prodded home by Brigg substitute Tommy Spall. Collinge was then called

upon to tip round the post a strong shot from Phil Doyle, and this time the low sunlight did not impede his judgement. Clitheroe did create a

final attempt on goal after Gary Jackson replaced Wolstenholme on 78 min utes but Stansfield shot wide of the mark. Clitheroe: Collinge,

Kearney (White), Hard wick, Clark, Nestor, Stansfield, Sargeson, Reynolds, Evans, Wol stenholme (Jackson), Johnson (Parr).

Wolves aim to go one better

CLITHEROE Wolves Under 13s Red have received a new sponsored strip from Rosslee Construction Limited ahead of the new Warburtons League season. The team (pictured, (s)) have been together for six years, and had five league cam

paigns to date, finishing runners-up ion both league and cup last season. The club would like to thank Pendle Antiques Centre, Sabden for their sponsorship

for the last three seasons, and also thank the parents of the club for their continued support.

Clitheroe target treble

CLITHEROE Cricket Club Under 11s are on target for the treble. The side saw off second

WFC Clilheroe.......... 0 Waddinglon

FOLLOWING on from a rigorous pre-season, Waddington commenced their Craven and District Premier League campaign with a hard-earned victory over near rivals WFC Clitheroe. The match proved to be

a closely-contested local derby, and after a hesitant start by both teams, it was Waddington who took the lead midway through the first half when Fletcher cut inside from the left

wing and scored with a fierce shot, giving the home keeper little chance. In the second half WFC

enjoyed a good 20-minute spell, during which they created and missed several good scoring opportuni

ties. During the last 20 min

utes, with the home side pushing forward for an equaliser, Waddington scored a second goal when Plarrison finished off a superb cross from Dug-

minutes, Dugdale blocked what looked like a certain goal for the home team on the line, and from the resulting clearance, Tier ney headed the ball wide to Fothergill, whose cross into the home penalty area was finished off by Dean. Waddington’s next fix

ture is at Carleton tonight, kick-off 6-30 p.m. All play ers to meet at Dugdales TV and Satellite shop, bottom of Chatburn Road, Clitheroe, at 5-30 p.m.

Chipping cruise to win

Chipping................................. ' Tarlelon Corinlhians ................ 1 CHIPPING continued their promising start to the season with a seven-goal romp against a poor Tarleton side. Chipping went ahead early on when

Malley stole in at the far post to finish from John Ross’ centre. The lead was extended shortly after

Proctor was shoved in the back and picked himself up to score from the spot. The locals reaped further reward

through new recruit Melling as his angled shot went in off the post. Tarleton pulled a goal back with a well-

placed drive, but the villagers increased their lead as Melling burst through from inside his own half to round the goalkeep

er and finish. After the break, substitute Austin net

ted a brace - a welcome return to goalscoring form for a player who has been out of action for some time through

injury. The scoring was completed by man of

the match Oily Hayhurst from close

range. Chipping will look to build on these

performances on Tuesday at home to local rivals Longridge Town.
