Fascinating insight into witches’ tale

MANY members and friends of Whalley and District Historical and Archaeological Society were presented with a wonderful evening given by Mrs Lizzie Jones. For her dramalogue she was dressed as a

housekeeper to Mr Roger Nowell who sent the nine Lancashire witches to the gallows in about 1582. Her interpretation was that the families were so poor and feuding among themselves that they were not bright enough to be witches. Mr Nowell was more or less act ing on the book written by King James I on “The Discovery of Witches”. The next meeting of the society will be on

January 22nd at 8 p.m. in Whalley Abbey. The subject of the talk by Mr Norman Thor pe will be “Myth and Fact - Another Look at the Great War”. New members are welcome and further

details can be obtained from Mr C. Ward, tel. 01254 53866.

Plans in the pipeline

A PLANNING application has been submit ted to develop the presently unused storage area to the rear of The New Inn, Parson Lane,- Clitheroe, to provide additional func tion room area (1019) together with a pro posed change of use of store building and internal alterations to form new kitchen, func tion room and six letting rooms (1020). Comments on the proposals must be made

to Ribble Valley Borough Council by tomor row. Other recent planning submissions are as

follows: Clitheroe: Caravan for an horticultural

worker at Hanson’s Garden Centre, Whalley Road, Barrow. (1016). Tosside: Conversion of barn to form work

shop unit with ancillary living accommoda tion at barn adjacent to Brockthorn Farm (1018). Waddington: Creation of French doors to

front and rear elevation a t The Moorcock Inn, Fell Road (1020).

Local opposition to industrial scheme

CONTROVERSIAL plans to build an indus- trial complex in Langho are due to be dis cussed tonight. Local opposition is mounting to the scheme

to build units at the Petre Wood and Garden Products site. Residents are already in the process of com

piling a petition against the proposal. The application will be discussed by Rib ble Valley Borough Council’s planning com

mittee. The meeting, which will be held in the

Council Chamber on Church Brow in Clitheroe, starts at 7 p.m.

unfortunately missed'a turning which is easily done. “I t was then too late for

him to turn back, park, and open the momentous event. "I did see him before-’

hand and he was fine sign ing autographs.” However, the guest star

of the evening, has accused the police of causing him to , miss the launch of the three-hour extravaganza. “I missed the turning by

15 yards, bu t I'was not allowed to reverse back because of heavy traffic,” said Mr Souness. .“I was very worried that

I would miss the opening of the event while finding a n . alternate parking space, a ■ mile away, and so asked for assistance from a police woman who was very unhelpful. “I had specially travelled

from my home in Cheshire and was more frustrated than the fans to have had a wasted return journey of three-and-a-half hours.” The disappearance of the

chief guest may have left villagers baffled, but mar vellous attractions added to an authentic 19th Century atmosphere. The event was finally

opened by Ribble Valley Mayor, Coun. Alan Tear ing.

serving festive goodies to an enthusiastic Pickwick crowd, and fine dry weather added to quality entertain ment making the event as successful as it ever could be.

Commenting on the spe

cial atmosphere with a Vic torian theme, chairman of. the Pickwick committee Mr Henry Shepherd explained: “The evening was a huge success, despite hiving lost Mr Souness. “We managed to raise

between £4,000 and £5,000, which is fantastic, to go ' towards local charities. “The new children’s activities and entertain

ment area, at, George Street car park, sponsored by the local Spar store, was thoroughly-enjoyed by all the youngsters. “I would personally like

to thank all the stall hold ers, members of the Pick wick committee who have worked very hard to organise the Victorian night, all the sponsors who supported us, and villagers for attending.” Insp. Bob Ford, from

Clitheroe police confirmed a well attended night with an excellent atmosphere and no trouble during the event. However, later in th e evening there'were

three arrests. Two arrests were made for drunk and disorderly behaviour and one for carrying an offen sive weapon. Some people had parked

without regard for others. As a result, a number of parking tickets were issued and a few vehicles were towed away. Mr Atty added:“Chil-

dren may have been left disappointed this time, but they will not be next year, as Mr Souness has agreed to open Pickwick Night next year, providing he gets a map and a car parking space reserved.”
