Premier league ladies toast auction success

r ,/V i have struck gold again. ' f ,,

THE premier league lady fund-': raisers from the Kibble Valley

• ’ At a charity auction, Ribble

Valley Ladies' Luncheon Club raised £17,000 for research into children's cancer. Since its move to Ewood Park,

the home of Blackburn Rovers, the club has going from strength to strength. The charity auction, which was

organised by local solicitors and committee members Irene Chen- ery and Carol Maher, from Irene Chenery, Maher Solicitors in Clitheroe, raised more than any one present could have envisaged. Irene Chenery said: “Our com

pany really put a lot of effort and enthusiasm into getting our clients and colleagues to support this very

worthwhile cause which resulted in • a spectacular amount of money being raised in just a few hours”/ . Ribble Valley Ladies' Luncheon Club had celebrity hairdresser Andrew Collinge speaking a t its Blackburn Rovers December lunch when more than 350 ladies raised more money for children’s cancer making a total of £ 22,000- plus being achieved. Nick Hall, Blackburn Rovers

Business Development Director, said: “I am delighted th a t this wonderful local group of ladies has chosen our venue to continue their good work. “The excellent cuisine provided

by Northcote Manor contributes to an excellent team of people working together to achieve this end result.”

Do not become a

drink-drive statistic FOR many of us, Christmas and New Year is a time of celebration - a chance to let our hair down and party, or to spend some relaxation time with family or friends. Whether it’s the “works do”, a few drinks

with colleagues on the last day a t work, a party at a friend’s house or a night out at the pub or restaurant, it is alsqa time when we tend to enjoy a few drinks.

' Most of us would not intentionally drive a car after, we had been drinking. But some peo ple still drink and drive routinely, while others find any number of excuses for just doing it once: “I only had a couple”; “I ’d had a big lunch”; “I feel fine to drive”; “I ’m only going down the road”. These are just a few exam ples. Unfortunately, any alcohol, even a small

drink, will make you a worse driver. You do not judge speed and distance so well and your reactions are not as fast. There is no failsafe guide to how much you

can drink and stay under the limit. The only safe way is not'to drink if you are driving. You may also still be affected by alcohol the

next day and could still he over the legal limit, and no amount of coffee or any other way of “sobering up”; will Help. I t just takes time. I^he'simpfe fact is that there are no accept-

afiletexcuSes for drink^driving. Last year near ly 80 people were killed or seriously injured in drink-drive collisions in Lancashire, with nearly 300 prosecutions for drinking and dri ving. That’s hundreds of Lancashire families

who didn’t have much cause for celebration. 'It’s also the reason why this year, as in pre

vious years, we will he deploying safety patrols and carrying out breath tests across the county to make sure that Lancashire’s roads are as safe as they can be for everyone. But that does not mean you cannot go out

and enjoy yourself. There are many things you can do to enjoy a drink and get home safely without driving yourself. For example, book a taxi or use public transport, take dri ving in turns with friends or stay overnight. I would also like to take this opportunity

to thank you in advance for helping to make the festive season in Lancashire a safe and happy time for all. Season’s greetings.

forces with London Electric to offer residents loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, cylin der jackets and draught proofing, all a t greatly reduced rates. For example, cavity wall insulation for a

three-bedroomed semi-detached house is on offer at £175, instead of the normal price of £475. Loft insulation is on offer at £125 to £225

and tank insulation at an additional £ 10. The council’s surveying manager, Mr Paul

MacNeall, said: “New houses are automati cally insulated, but older properties were built to lower insulation standards and are therefore more expensive to heat. “Insulation can result in massive energy

savings for the householder, cut down on harmful emissions and add to the;resale value of a property.”

’ Cavity wall insulation acts like a tea cosy,

preventing heat from escaping from a house and keeping rooms warmer for longer. Loft insulation prevents heat from rising

and going straight through the roof, while draught proofing cuts ou t unpleasant draughts from around windows, external doors, letterboxes, keyholes and cat flaps. Only a quarter of the 22 million dwellings

in the UK are adequately draught proofed, yet draught proofing offers the quickest return, frequently paying for itself within a year.

Mr MacNeall added: “Fitting high-quali

ty draught proofing to windows and external doors alone can help householders, particu larly the elderly, keep warm and cut fuel bills by around 10%.
