Equipment levels are strong too: like all Toledos, this version comes with twin front and side airbags, plus ABS. In addition, you get climate controlled air conditioning, remote control central locking with alarm, sports seats with black Diagonal upholstery and all­ round electric windows. Although the on- paper performance figures are respectable, enough, as with all powerful diesel cars the subjective ‘seat of the pants’ feel makes the Toledo seem a whole lot quicker than its sprint to 60 m.p.h. of 8.6 seconds would suggest.

I t ’s worth calculating how many miles you drive per year and how many years you plan to own the car before plumping for a pricier diesel ver­ sion. Chances are the C21.1 model will work out as the more economical all­ round proposition.
