Roefield hit by goal blast

Roefield Leisure U9s......... ; ............... 1 Great Harwood Tigers .......................9 ROEFIELD went into this match with •; high hopes of securing a point but the ini- tial first five: minutes were closely fought and the rest of the game told a rather dif ferent course.

, A sloppy goal kick and a subsequent defensive lapse allowed the Tigers to go 1-0 ahead and the locals then allowed a further ’

- few goals go against them before they decided to play. A dubious penalty, was sold ,to the referee

but the goal was disallowed as it rebounded ; off the post before the taker followed up his shot.

- Some good passing from the Jacks in

' defence helped Duerden build attacks as Roefield came close twice before they opened their account, when a superb through ball from Parker, was collected by Bilbie who fired it into the net. Roefield got better as.the half went on-

and Wallis and Burrill came on as substi tutes, but things did not go well in the sec ond half and the Tigers were applying all the pressured Bilbie came close again and Duerden was

. unlucky not to add a second as Colley proved solid.in midfield and both Robson and Gaffney worked hard at the back, b u t : Roefield .seemed to lose hope and the final score was inevitable.

Rimington . .......................5 Clitheroe LEGION . A. . .1. RIMINGTON ran out worthy, winners of this local derby but i t ; was, far from an easy ride against a combative Legion side.; Rimington opened the scoring

when Matt Coulter sprang the offside trap to latch on to an- Alan Sayle long ball to round Clitheroe keeper Kenyon and score. • And it soon became 2-0 when Tom O'Neill raced down the left and his cross to the far post was hammered home by Gari Haslam.- . The home-side, trying a new

formation, found Haslam and O'Neill as willing outlets and their pace was a constant threat, but they, did not have things all their own way with Gary Ward dropping deep and running at the defenders .to, cause problems.-

Rimington claim the derby day honours

,; Rimington’s lead was extend ed immediately in the second half as Haslam nipped in to score from an acute angle, and as the Legion pushed forward, the home side were dangerous on the break with the lively Coulter unlucky on several occasions not to score.

. Eventually the honour fell to Liam Carter for the villagers next goal when he broke clear and coolly chipped the ball over the despairing Kenyon. Justin Waterhouse later

Waddington close in on the leaders

Waddington ........................ 5 Horton....................................2 WADDINGTON had another, impressive victory to close the,.: gap on the promotion contenders in the Craven and District Foot ball League in a game that was again played in less than brilliant weather conditions. On a sticky pitch Waddington

had attack after attack and were finding it hard to beat Horton's keeper. But playing some quality foot

ball, Waddington found the back of the net with two well worked goals, the first being from Peter Fletcher and the second dis pensed by Martin Cane. But Horton battled on and

restored a goal to go in 2-1 at half-time. Waddington took control from

the start with Adam Spence and Simon Cunliffe halting any Hor ton attacks. But against, the run of play,

Horton scored again with a fluke goal. The locals had now to lift their

game which they did and a break by Robert Lloyd saw the player upended in the box, and Lloyd made no mistake with the resultr ing spot kick. Now back in control Wadding

ton had chance after chance only to be halted by the Horton keep er, but with 10 minutes remain ing, Peter Fletcher broke through to calmly slot the ball home. This was a good all round per- .

formance with Martin Cane, Wayne Boothman and Tim Pagan all impressive for the vil lagers. Waddington's next game is a t . home to Skip ton Town on Satur day in the league. Their-oppo-

nents are in second place and it is another important game for the locals.

>: All players to meet at ground 1 p.m. and must ring Tony Pritt by tonight to confirm availability (07977516334/01200427524). Oakworlh Juniors................3

Waddington Reserves......... 2 WADDiNGTON can count themselves very unlucky not to come away with at least a point against the division's top club. In the first half, with the vil

lagers shooting into a gale force wind, their spirits were lifted when Luke Conti opened the scoring, but despite their best efforts they conceded two goals in quick succession. Then against the run of play

Ashley Chaplin drew level with a break away goal after good work from Paul Tierney. After the break, with the wind

behind them, Waddington pressed hard for the winner and created some good chances, but failed to hit the net. And with 15 minutes remain

ing, the locals were caught out when the Oakworth captain shot from the edge of the box to beat Wayne Leach in the Wadding ton, a somewhat lucky effort that slipped through Leach's hands with hard rain now coming down. Andrew,Read was Wadding

ton's man-of-the-match-in what was the reserves last game of the year. The locals will be hoping that

pulled one back for Clitheroe, but Carter had the last, word as he raced down the left before - unselfishly squaring for Coulter to score. Rimington boss Terry Braith-

waite was satisfied with hoe the experimental formation went and it now gives him a different option to use; although he admits they need to work on it. This week sees Rimington

face a very important Craven Cup tie at Settle as a win main tains the side's interest for the

Chatburn score

Chatburn big win Cowling.........................1

...............8

'CHATBURN ensured pole position in the Craven and District Football League First Division was guaran teed for Christmas with another emphatic victory against Cowling. Kicking down the slope

the visitors had the better of the early exchanges and keeper Hargreaves had to be on top form to keep Cowling at bay. Chatburn began to take

control with Curtis and Sweeney running the mid- field enabling a break through to be sought when Duff scored from the penalty spot. Chatburn's new found centre forward then made it 2-0 with a diving header just before half-time. Just like the week before,

Chatburn dominated the second half and scored six more goals, but fair play must be given to Cowling for clawing a consolatory goal back. Sullivan played a one-

two with Brown to beat the keeper at the near post and make it 3-1 before Brown scored one of his own to make it four. A hat-trick then followed

for M. Sullivan who scored all three goals in. the space of a 10 minute period to leave Cowling down and out. Captain

Simon

Hodgkinson, not to be out done, scored the eighth goal to put the final touch to a magnificent result.

, . The locals have now won their

last six games after this hard fought battle saw the two sides lock horns. In what could only be

described as the proverbial game of two halves, Rock Rovers

failed to create any chances in the first section of play with the. wind behind them and playing downhill. And the best chance of the first half fell to Rimington's Aamir Zulfi who when clean; through, slotted the ball wide of the out coming keeper and unfortunately the.wrong side of the post.

. • After the break both sides

struggled in the blustery weath er but Rimington showed the necessary passion and got a deserved winner when a Jason Farmer shot was fumbled by the keeper into the path of Andrew Blackledge who pounced on the ball for his first of the season. : The remainder of the game

saw Rovers apply a little pres sure, however few chances arose. Man-of-the-match was Jamie Clarkson who produced a solid defensive display.

Solid display lands important win

Thornton Cleveleys...............1

Chipping ...............................2 IN the Preston and District League Third Division, Chipping produced another solid display that saw them take all three points over Thornton. Playing in an unfamiliar role at

left back, Phil Peck had an excel lent game culminating in an excep tional moment when he ran full length of the pitch to set up the on- rushing Neary who slammed his shot just inches wide. It was then from Peck’s powerful

run and shot that Daniel Austin poached his 31st goal of the season. The keeper spilled Peck’s shot and Austin robbed the rebound from his grasp and rolled the ball into the empty net, leaving the keeper to thump the ground in disgust. The strong wind was making

things difficult and Chipping had to defend well from several corners. Dave Ross pressed forward from

right back and sent a looping cross towards the back post that was exquisitely met by the spritely John Critchley, who launched himself into a full length dive to plant a firm header into the bottom comer from eight yards out. The young Cleveleys side kept

their heads up and equalised when they managed to bundle the ball in from a comer, while in the centre of the park Johnny Fletcher and John Critchley both had superb games. After the break Austin went close

twice and Steve Ross fizzed a free kick just wide. Matt Ireland, in the Chipping

goal, tipped a rasping shot around the post and Chipping's hard work was very nearly undone when with the very last kick of the game a Thornton forward escaped the defence and his ferocious shot whis tled past a post.
