engined coupes were almost de rigeur, Ferrari persisted with the 400GT, a four-seat front engined smoothie. The 400 developed into the 412 and that in turn was replaced by the deli­ cious 456. The 612 Scaglietti that now takes its turn in that lineage offers something of a departure. Ferrari claims it is front-mid engined. This sounds something of a contradiction in


terms but the engineering behind the claim is sound. Hang a heavy engine out at either the front or the back of a vehicle and you are ask­ ing for all sorts of negative handling aspects. It took Porsche years to tame the handling of


. the 911 due to this pendulum effect. Bring the engine’s weight inside the line of either axle and you have a car that is a good deal lighter on its feet. That is exactly what Ferrari hopes to have achieved with the 612 Scaglietti. The name refers to the Ferrari-owned


coachbuilder who will fashion the car’s all-alu­ minium body, and harks back to the days that Sergio Scaglietti himself hammered out body parts for prototype Ferrari models. The most distinctive aspect to the design


are the scalloped flanks which are reminiscent of early Corvettes. Otherwise much of the exterior design is unmistakably contemporary Ferrari, including the metallic grille at the front and a rear end that many will struggle to distinguish from the 575 Maranello two-seater. Of course, the major difference between the,


cars is the fact that the 612 Scaglietti will seat four. The rear seats are a good deal more spa­ cious than the rather token affairs in the 456 although they are still not a place you would opt to spend any great time. The boot is also bigger - a good 25 per cent up on the 456 - and well up to the task of swallowing a couple of golf bags. Access to the rear is helped by the fact that the front seat belts are built into the seats themselves and fold forward, but you will still need to make a rather committed move for the deeply scooped back seats.

that makes most rivals look very mass market. The dashboard is a little different to the stan­ dard Ferrari model, with an LCD instrument display occupying the left-hand side of the instrument binnacle next to the rev counter. This is marshalled by the controls on a multi­ function steering wheel. The quality of the 612 Scaglietti’s rivals is

far better than the cars the 456 found itself lined up against. Even with a 540 b.h.p. engine under the bonnet, the Ferrari is outgunned by . powerhouses such as the Bentley Continental GT and the Mercedes CL65 AMG, both cars that hold a significant price advantage over the Italian. Revised intake and exhaust mani­ folds provide a 35 b.h.p. gain over what is essentially a similar engine in the 575 Maranello. Power is transmitted either by a six-speed manual gearbox with the classic open metal gate or alternatively by the F1A gear­ box. Any car with 540 b.h.p. under the bonnet


and 1835kg to haul up the road is going to,be extremely rapid and the 612 Scaglietti does not disappoint. It will hammer to 60 m.ph in 4.1 seconds and hit a top speed of 196 m.p.h.• where conditions allow, making it marginally quicker than its Bentley and Mercedes rivals. The biggest threat to Scaglietti sales is likely to come from the Aston Martin Vanquish, a car which offers a very similar blend of talents and a broadly comparable asking price. Whether the Ferrari can match the Vanquish’s awesome soundtrack and road’manners is open to debate but if history has taught us anything, it is that the Ferrari could well have a little extra tucked up its sleeve. , ■,,, •

model that comes replete with six airbags, anti lock brakes, electric win­ dows but no compact disc player. Trade up to the £13,675 LX model


and you will find the archaic tape player has been replaced by a disc slot and you will also get air conditioning. This seems like £500 well spent. The top of the 1.6- litre line up is the Zetec version tha!t car­ ries a sticker price of £14,625 but adds alloy wheels, body-coloured trim and a more versatile sliding rear seat arrange­ ment that genuinely differentiates the Focus C-MAX from its hatchback sib­ ling. As a top-quality halfway house into


mini-MPV ownership, the Focus C- MAX 1.6 has a whole lot going for it.

pany’s design philosophy, did not appear quite as gauche as when it first appeared on the Seven Series. Unlike the original Six, which was to all intents and purposes a Seven Series coupe, the latter-day model rides on a modified version of the 5 Series chassis. At the moment there is only one 6 Series


model available, the £49,850 645i, but more engines are expected to follow in late 2004 with a Convertible version also join­ ing the ranks. A mouthwatering 500 b.h.p. M6 is also rumoured to be in the offing. No fewer than three transmissions are avail­ able to hitch up to the 645i’s glorious 333 b.h.p. V8 power plant. Aside from a con­ ventional six-speed manual gearbox, there is also a six-speed automatic Steptronic


gearbox. Or for those who want the conve­ nience of a sequential manual gearbox but really want to take control when charging hard, there is the Fl-style SMG system with steering wheel mounted paddles. Although the 6451 can lift its skirt and


hustle when needs be, as evidenced by a sprint to 60 m.p.h. in just 5.3 seconds, it is by no means an out and out sports car. The ride is firmer than you may expect, the big tyres occasionally crashing through pot­ holes. That said, the 6 Series feels just that little bit too big to be a truly effective cross-country tool. On sweeping A-roads, however, the 645i is magnificent, third gear capable of reaching over 100 m.p.h. It is so much better on so many levels


that it has to be judged a success. Star quality is a tricky thing to define but the 6 Series just has it. Don’t ask me why - just see for yourself.
