Blues boss aiming beat bridesmaids’

ACCORDING to old the saying, you don’t ■ get anything for com- : V

Sculpher is out to lay his sides bridesmaid status to rest once and for all.
The club are currently
challenging well in the league, as well as the Chal lenge Cup and the Lan cashire Marsden Trophy. And Sculpher feels it is
time to get his hands on some silverware: “I think its time this club stepped forward and actually won something. • “We’ve been second so many times over the past few years, not just in the league but in the Challenge Cup and so on. ■ “We tend to be the
bridesmaids of this league and it’s time to get noticed. “We’re in three different
competitions, but the league is undoubtedly our main priority. “That is the prize every
one at the club is gunning for, and it is the one every one wants to win. “The league is over nine
or 10 months and the best side always wins it, where as the best side doesn’t always win the cups. “So if we were to win the
league, we will know we are the best.” And what better way to
clinch the North West Counties First Division title than to pip familiar rivals Mossley: “Mossley are always up there every

season, they’ve got consid erable financial backing whereas we just get on with our own business. ’‘So to pip them to the
league would be a massive achievement for everyone concerned with Clitheroe Football Club. “They nicked the Chal
lenge Cup off us last year and beat us twice in the league, and now beaten us at Shawbridge this season.” Meanwhile, the Blues
were drawn at home to face Bacup Borough in the
quarter-finals of the Chal lenge Cup, as well as a home tie against either Morecambe or Rossendale United in the Marsden Trophy. And Sculpher welcomed
the two as a break away from their league priorities: “We did very well in that competition last year, and we are looking to go back this time around and go one better. “It was disappointing to
lose in the final but these things happen.
Morecambe in the Lan cashire Trophy, at home, so tha t should give us a decent tie. “It will certainly gee the
lads up a bit, and for once we might go into a game as underdogs. “It isn’t often I can say
that about a game but it might suit us this time. “And the cups are a bit of
light relief from our league aspirations, so we go into them with nothing to lose.” Clitheroe have also
brought back former play er Alf Russell as well as Stephen Bird - both from Rossendale United. But Sculpher was
delighted with the perfor mance of Glyn Barker, who finally made his debut in the 5-1 win over St Helen’s Town after a month wait ing in the wings. He added: -“I was
absolutely delighted with the win, our home form hasn’t been the best for the best part of six weeks. “Last week we were in a position chasing Mossley
and we are slowly keeping pace with them. “We have Lee Cryer
back now up front, and Glyn Barker’s performance on Saturday impressed me. “It looked like those two
had played together all sea son, they’re link-up play and distribution were excel lent. “But I was delighted
with Glyn’s performance, he has waited a long time for his debut but it was worth the wait.” . NORTHWEST

saw his shot go over the bar. A similar opportunity arose for
Barker moments later and' this time his run into the area was ended when he was pulled down. He took the spot kick himself and
saw his weak shot easily saved by Ryan McMahon. Luck was on the side of the new man though and the referee ordered a re-take as the keeper had moved off his line. Barker made no mistake with his
second opportunity but his shot just floated over the crossbar. Parkinson did get on the score-
sheet just before half-time, again a pass from the lively Barker put him in on goal and after the keeper spilled, his shot, Parkinson was able to tap the rebound home. Clitheroe totally dominated their
opponents for long periods of the game and quick, slick passing saw them carve open further chances in the second half. Glen Ainsworth and Barker linked up on 50 minutes to
release Barrie Hart on the left hand side of the penalty area and he fired a shot past the helpless keeper for the Blues'fourth goal. Lee Cryer saw a couple of good
opportunities both miss the target before the visitors gained a consola tion. From a corner the referee awarded a penalty for holding inside the area and St Helens top scorer, Terry Anderson, made no mistake from the spot on 63 minutes. With five minutes remaining
Clitheroe wrapped up the victory with the goal of the game. Substitute Stuart Todhunter picked the ball up 25 yards from goal, steadied himself with one touch before firing home a stunning long-range finish into the top left hand comer to give Clitheroe another three vital points. Clitheroe: Richens, Gardner, Hart,
Bird, Sculpher, Reynolds, Ainsworth, Stansfield, Cryer, Barker, Parkinson. Substitutes: Aspinwall, McDonald, Todhunter.

Clitheroe hit hard by injuries
North Ribblesdale ..17 Clitheroe......................5 A MATCH that could have been billed as a war of the

home pitch in a semi- waterlogged state, Clitheroe were also informed that as the hosts could not find a recognised front-row all the scrums would have to be what is euphemistically known as uncontested. This immediately deval
ued the forward battle, and the set piece scrums in par ticular, into a rather poorly played game of rugby league. To handicap the local
town team further, a num ber of injuries and work commitments reduced the

were to leave the field injured as the match pro gressed. Scrum half Owain Jones'

The Ribble Valley side's
solitary try came after a break down the narrow side of a maul, and with Ralf Rigby to the fore he han dled the ball for Ollie McEntyre to slide over. Despite looking the

Clitheroe were architects of their own downfall as some of the witless penalties con ceded will be severely pun ished on Saturday when league rugby returns to Littlemoor. Clitheroe's next oppo
