A LIFE-SAVING team in a Ribble Val ley village was hailed for its excellent work - and received £3,700 from the bor ough council. The Read and Simonstone Community Vol

untary First Responders team was presented with the money, which was raised from savings on last year’s revenue budget, by Ribble Valley Borough Council.

Tribute to the volunteers for their exceptional

work in establishing the team for the village was paid by Coun. John Hill, (Read and Simon stone), who presented the cheque at Read Con servative Club. He said: “I hope the grant will go some way

to providing the essential life-saving equipment that is so desperately needed to allow.the respon ders to play a vital role in supporting the emer gency services. The work of the team has

already made an impact and is, exactly the type of help needed in our villages., I hope the initia tive will encourage others to become first respon ders, so that in time there will be a network of them covering every part of the Ribble Valley.” Our picture shows the Mayor and Mayoress

Mid-week walks are popular at rambling club

MORE walks and more walkers were key ingredients in another very successful year for the Clitheroe Group of the Ramblers’ Associ ation.

......... Members recently held their 35th annual

reported that she felt the group had experi enced a very good year with increased num bers attending the walks, good weather and a wonderful year for walking to many different places. She highlighted the fact that the Wednes

meeting a t Clitheroe Cricket Club, which opened with a special welcome to area secre tary Sue Baxendale. In her chairman’s address, Jane Donnelly

day afternoon walks are much appreciated and cater for different people, for example, those looking for shorter walks. She felt that the success of the group was due to the hard working members of the committee, particu larly Ben Brown and the footpath secretariat. The group now has around 50 walks leaders

and a training day on map and compass work for such leaders has been arranged for March 2004, in conjunction with Lancashire County Council. The chairman went on to thank all the

committee for their work during the year, with special thanks to those members who are retiring this year. They are Angela Parker, who has been treasurer for eight years, John Hudson, who has been countryside officer for seven years, and Gill Morpeth who has been press and publicity officer for a total of nine years. The next item on the agenda was the secre

tary's annual report. Ben Brown reported that the policy of increasing the number of walks had been successful as numbers on Wednes day and weekend walks had increased. The total number of walks in 2003 will be

110 in comparison to 1983 when there were just 35.

He then highlighted th a t over the year,

attendances had exceeded 2,000 for the first time. Information about the Clitheroe Group walks has been available on the Ramblers website at www.ramblers.org.uk since July. Mr Brown went on to point out that Val

Grooby has this year taken over as walks co ordinator and that for next year's programme, for the first time, there will be a walk every weekend. He congratulated both Val Grooby and Jane Donnelly on their work, having only just come on to the committee. The treasurer’s report came next and the

accounts were approved, the information hav ing been circulated to members prior to the meeting. Pat Parrott, in her role as footpath secretary, then gave her report. She thanked Bryan Dobson for stepping in to help and informed members that walks published in “the Valley” would cease to appear from Feb ruary 2004.

Mrs P arro tt then referred to the public

inquiry into downgrading Sawley bridleways stating that the downgrading has not been confirmed. The social secretary’s report con firmed th a t all events had gone well. The

•remaining reports were presented. ■ Beverley Raynor was elected as treasurer,

Pat Parrott as countryside officer, Louise Gorman as press and publicity officer and Jane Donnelly as the second area committee delegate. All other officers were re-elected and Jane Donnelly asked for members to come for

ward if they were interested in helping on the social committee. _ John Eamshaw congratulated the outgoing

committee and area secretary Sue Baxendale congratulated the group on its success and

thanked everyone for all their efforts and time. Light refreshments were served and

Eleanor Friend gave a slide show of her favourite walks and places, which was greatly appreciated and enjoyed by all.
