HI S TOR IC CHE S T E R CITY CHIC MEETS CULTURE
Looking for a city break that offers it all – culture, architecture, retail therapy and fine dining – then look no further than Chester. A fabulous place for a couple of days of Christmas shopping, the walled Roman and medieval city is compact enough to make a shopping trip easy to navigate whilst also offering plenty of other attractions too.
Editor Sally-ann Bloomer paid a quick visit to find out what makes Chester the perfect place for a bit of R&R.
Far enough away to make a visit seem like a break away but close enough to our region that all your precious time off isn’t spent getting there is one of its first attractions. Once there though the delights just keep on coming.
Step into the city centre and it’s hard to miss the city walls surrounding it. In fact Chester has the most complete ancient city walls of anywhere – this is a city which has fiercely protected its heritage. There’s also the largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain and if that wasn’t enough, right at the heart you’ll also find the 1000-year-old cathedral, complete with magnificent examples of medieval carvings, all of this making for a beautiful backdrop to what has become a thriving shopping destination. All of these places can be explored alongside a knowledgeable city guide available with Roman Tours (
www.romantoursuk.com) or the Guild of Chester Tour Guides (
www.chestertours.org.uk) for anyone wanting to delve deeper into the city’s past.
There is also a unique shopping experience in Chester with the 700-year-old Rows galleries, shops on the ground floor and up on a second level too via a series of steps. With an abundance of independent stores and high street names, there’s something for everyone along these cobbled streets.
Nestling between these are many and varied bars and eateries to suit all tastes and pockets for the weary shopper. We popped in for a glass of rosé prosecco at Veeno, an Italian wine bar close to the Cathedral, and later to Brewhouse and Kitchen so the other half could sample a pint of local ale produced in the onsite microbrewery which you can see from the pavement outside.
