CELEBRATION OF A LEGEND REMEMBERING ROUNDY. . . 10 YEARS ON

We look back to the time when Anthony’s laughter filled the showrooms and his zest for life was embraced by the Rudells team. “He was our amazing front man”.

Anthony looked upon everyone at Rudells as a member of his extended family and was the kindest and most generous ‘boss’ you could ever meet. He remembered everyone’s birthday and there was always a card with ‘a little something’ inside. At Christmas, Roundy would give all the staff a gift as his way of saying thank you for the hard work and effort everyone contributed to the success of the company. Both traditions continue today, thanks to Jon Weston, who was mentored by Anthony, and now leads the company.

The Rudell family of Justin, Etta and Anthony were all well known around the West Midlands, and they were enormous supporters of many charitable causes. Anthony particularly worked tirelessly for our communities and was always supporting a fundraising effort. It was through his support of The Variety Club of Great Britain that brought him into contact with Diana, Princess of Wales.

He often told the story of the night he met her in Birmingham and how delightful and down to earth she was. He was so very proud to have been photographed with Diana and the photograph now stands in Jon Weston’s office. Anthony felt that spending a few hours with Diana was the pinnacle of his fundraising achievements. Cure Leukemia and the Wolverhampton School for the Blind were also benefactors of Anthony’s time and fundraising ability and he really enjoyed working tirelessly to help these amazing causes which were close to his heart, our support of these worthy causes continues today.

opportunity of opening their home and garden when they hosted the annual staff barbecue to which husbands, wives and children were all invited. Anthony loved children and he was always happy to hear the sound of fun as the children (and a few adults) played on the bouncy castle which would be installed in the garden for the day. A team of caterers would be employed and everyone would enjoy the feast. Anthony would flip the burgers and cook the sausages which was his way of showing his appreciation to the staff and their families.

Anthony’s spirit, personality and ‘joie de vivre’ is still felt within the showrooms today and we all know that he would be immensely proud to see the ongoing success of the company and the expansion and continuous developments of Rudells.

Jon Weston said “I shared many monumentally funny times with Roundy over the years. We worked very closely and he became my best mate. Don’t get me wrong, he tasked me hard, taught me well and I taught him too, we had the utmost strong respect for each other and a very strong friendship.

I remember being on a very tiring buying trip with him, we were both exhausted. Whilst waiting for a late afternoon meeting, we sat down on some chairs in the reception of the hotel we were staying at. We had been working since early that morning, Roundy started to drift off so I nudged him two or three times saying stay awake buddy. Eventually he took out his phone and played Sudoku….

…. I, meanwhile, made the big mistake of laying my head back, briefly, in the armchair. The next thing I knew was when I woke up about an hour later …. He had left me in the middle of the busy reception flat out asleep. Roundy had gone to his room and left a tent note on me which read

‘Free to a good home’!! He had a hilariously mischievous side to him that most of us experienced, bless him.

On a more personal level, Anthony and Ricky delighted in the

I miss my good friend every day, I know we all do. My wish would be to have enjoyed many more years with him, but I know he’s enjoying a well-earned rest and his famous laugh resonates with us forever”
