Stewart engages others and collaborates in a multidisciplinary environment. He has shown exemplary leadership in overcoming significant challenges in establishing and expanding his innovative services.
One challenge he faced was communicating the aims of the Frailty Clinic, which focused on chronic multi- morbidity reviews rather than diagnosing new conditions.
Some patients, having experienced negative NHS services, presented hostility. Stewart remained calm and built resilience while listening to their concerns and addressing them thoughtfully.
In his role as the lead pharmacist for 10 GP practices, Stewart regularly communicates with practices to address concerns about high workloads and role variety. He ensures that pharmacists and pharmacy technicians have varied roles within primary care, balancing routine tasks with more engaging challenges.
Stewart's leadership has had a profound impact on operational effectiveness and patient services. He encourages staff to enrol in the NES Foundation course and the RPS Core Advanced Curriculum, increasing sign- ups from zero to seven pharmacists. His role as an editor of the Lothian Prescribing Bulletin for seven years has promoted prescribing excellence and safety updates.
Furthermore, he builds invaluable links with community pharmacies, working towards developing cross- sector pharmacists.
His multifaceted approach to promoting and advancing pharmacy includes linking pharmacy with third- sector organizations to promote environmentally sustainable services for mental and physical health.
