HOSPITAL PHARMACY OF THE YEAR
ANTIMICROBIAL AND SURGICAL TEAMS UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL WISHAW, NHS LANARKSHIRE
The Antimicrobial and Surgical Teams within NHS Lanarkshire, based at University Hospital Wishaw, have been recognised as the 'Hospital Pharmacy Team of the Year' at the Scottish Pharmacist Awards. Their commitment to improving patient care and their innovative approach to pharmacy practice have made them a standout winner.
In 2023, the Antimicrobial Team led several significant developments, producing and updating a suite of antimicrobial policies while training a new pharmacist and covering maternity leave.
The team also developed the Out Patient Antimicrobial Treatment (OPAT) service, which was a key success, allowing patients to be safely discharged home while

continuing intravenous (IV) antibiotic therapy. This was crucial during the busy winter months, as it released bed capacity, especially within orthopaedics.
In addition to these clinical improvements, the team coordinated quality improvement and audit projects, mentoring junior pharmacists and guiding them in developing research skills. Their work led to improved
clinical practice and patient care, and they have published and presented their findings at national conferences. The collaborative efforts of the Antimicrobial and Surgical Teams, along with the OPAT team, significantly improved patient care.
Education was provided to the entire pharmacy team on the drivers for OPAT, ensuring dispensary staff were aware of the developments and used
