Their innovative, collaborative approach, and compassionate care have not only enhanced their local community's health but have also advanced the role and perception of community pharmacy in Scotland
During this period of local crisis, the pharmacy team worked with local health and social care organizations and the wider community to go above and beyond to ensure patients had uninterrupted access to medicines and care.
Recognising the challenges which the Brechin community faced in accessing appointments with the local surgery during the crisis and being the only pharmacy in town offering the Pharmacy First Plus service, the team at Davidsons Chemist was motivated to make this service as seamless as possible for both patients and surgery teams.
This involved the whole pharmacy team pulling together to focus on accessibility, exceptional care, and communication.
Anticipating access difficulties during the storm, the two pharmacists arranged to stay in a local hotel, ensuring continued care when GPs could not reach Brechin.
Despite a leak in the dispensary, the team used torches and portable lights to provide uninterrupted service.
Due to wholesale delivery delays, the team rationed supplies to ensure all patients received essential medications.
They also made arrangements with the local Drug and Alcohol Team to provide advance supplies of medication to high-risk patients.
The team's commitment during this crisis included leveraging GP notes access to support acute prescription requests, contingency plans with the Health Board to broaden the IP pharmacist's scope of practice, and proactive visits to the local refuge site to ensure displaced persons had access to their required medications.
Their collaboration with practice nurses and independent prescribers created a comprehensive support system that benefited the local community.
