LIVERPOOL CABS ‘MAKEOVER’ FOR LOCAL HOSPICE

Two Liverpool taxis have also undergone a makeover - for a Liver- pool hospice.

The event was in cele- bration of Marie Curie providing 50 years of hospice care in the city. Merseyside Fundrais- er Colette Byrne told the Liverpool Echo: “The two cabs are by far the cheeriest way to get around town. “But more importantly, they are providing fan- tastic mobile support for our celebrations, letting everyone who sees them know about our Grand Canyon Trek, Zipwire event at the Port of Liverpool

Building and encour- aging everyone to get involved in our Great Daffodil Appeal that took place in March. “The taxis have proved a great success, and helped heighten the charity’s profile right across Liverpool.” The cab makeover costs of £1,600 were covered by Liverpool taxi fleet owner Eddie MacDonnell.

Eddie and several cab drivers take part in an annual golf day to raise funds for the Liv- erpool Hospice, and decided to provide the free taxi make-over after their colleague

Billy Duffy passed away at the hospice from throat cancer. Colette added: “We can’t thank Eddie and the cabbies enough. “The taxis are just the start of our plan to ‘paint the town yellow’, we are also planning to turn the world famous Liver Building yellow in recognition of our Great Daffodil Appeal, which rans throughout March.’’ Colette added: ‘’If any- one would like to help collect for this year’s appeal, please call us on 0151 801 1405, and help us make this year’s the best ever.” The Marie Curie Hos- pice Liverpool provides specialist medical and nursing care to 1,200 local cancer patients each year.

COLLECT TOKENS TO MAKE WISHES COME TRUE IN LIVERPOOL

The Liverpool Echo’s great Wish Token race has begun! The aim is to collect as many tokens as possible to secure a share in the £50,000 pot to be dis- tributed between qualifying community and not-for-profit bod- ies across Merseyside. Every organisation that has been accept- ed into the Wish Campaign is guaran- teed to win something - but exactly how much depends on how well supporters can organise the col-

lection of their Wish tokens.

One group that is planning a big cam- paign is the Liverpool Taxi Drivers’ Children In Care Outing Fund. Once a year the taxi drivers organise a special children’s out- ing, now one of the great city institutions. The first trip was to Blackpool, and as well as North West destina- tions, children have been taken as far afield as Disneyland Paris. “We’d like to repeat that this year to mark

our 25th anniversary,” said group treasurer Bernie Buxton, who is coordinating the token collections. “We’ve also got a din- ner dance arranged for the Adelphi Hotel in June, with a lot of local celebrities offering their support.”

Leading groups have already collected between 500 and 700 tokens each in their dash for cash, accord- ing to preliminary figures supplied to the Echo Wish Campaign team.
