MENTIONING MARSHALS

£7,500 GOES TO DERBY TAXI MARSHAL IDEA

A further £7,500 has been ploughed into a city centre scheme which helps ensure revellers get home safely after a night out. Derby Community Safety Partnership has invested the cash into the taxi marshalling scheme, which oper- ates in the centre on Friday and Saturday nights.

The money will be spent on head-cams to record incidents, portable barriers and lights as well as high- visibility uniforms for the four marshals, who are based in Vic- toria Street and Friar Gate.

Nick Daines, from the Derby Community Safety Partnership, told the Derby Evening Telegraph: “This addi-

tional investment will improve the service that the marshals pro- vide with better visibility, lighting and queuing systems. “It will also enable them to record inci- dents which will then be forwarded to the police; this will then be used as valuable evi- dence in future prosecutions for inci- dents of crime and anti-social behaviour. “Further, by ensuring that there is no queue- jumping taking place at taxi ranks, which can lead to fights breaking out, the scheme also encour- ages more people to use the ranks rather than wandering the streets and flagging down unlicensed cabs.”

NEW MARSHALLED RANK IN HAYMARKET

Transport for London has moved the existing Cranbourne Street marshalled taxi rank to Haymarket in response to the taxi trade’s con- cerns about touting in the area.

The new Haymarket marshalled rank start- ed operating on Friday

12 March.

John Mason, TfL’s Director of Taxi and Private Hire, said: “I’ve seen for myself the popularity of mar- shalling schemes and TfL will continue to seek funding for future schemes in other key areas.”

CHELMSFORD MARSHAL SCHEME EXTENDED

A taxi marshal scheme in Chelmsford will be extended to a second rank in the town. Following the award of a further three months of funding for the scheme, it will now include the new taxi rank at Chelmsford bus station. The scheme has been operating from the Bad- dow Road rank for the

past six months.

Chelmsford councillor responsible for safer communities Ian Grundy told the Chelmsford Weekly News: “The taxi marshal pilot scheme has proved very successful and recent crime figures have shown a reduc- tion in public order offences in the area.”

BRIGHTON DRIVERS ASKED TO FOOT BILL FOR MARSHALS

Taxi drivers will be asked to foot the bill for marshals to police late-night queues. They were introduced at the end of last year after a one-off £5,000 grant from the Home Office.

After support from Sus- sex Police and the drivers, the marshals will become permanent at city centre ranks dur- ing peak night hours. Officers at Brighton and Hove City Council have suggested the cost should be added to the hackney carriage vehicle fee. This would mean the current fee of £180 would increase to £203 per year.

Marshals are stationed at city centre ranks in West Street and East Street and at the Old Ship Hotel on Friday

and Saturday nights. But the agreement expired at the end of March. To continue it year-round would cost about £12,000.

According to the Brighton Argus, the Brighton and Hove Taxi Drivers’ Forum agreed the increase in licence fees was acceptable at its meet- ing in January.

A statement from Sus- sex Police said: “The new scheme has been well received by the trade, the public and police officers who are now released from this critical role and able to revert to their core duties.

“Financial support from the taxi compa- nies is welcomed and appropriate as a sus- tainable way forward.”
