An Eastbourne taxi driver is following in the footsteps of four generations of hack- ney carriage drivers. Paul Williams, 42, comes from a family of taxi drivers, dating back more than 150 years to a time when Queen Victoria had only been on the throne for a few years. great-great-grand- father Richard Cork who was a hackney carriage driver with a horse and cart. Paul’s great-grandfa- ther Arthur Cork followed on in the 1900s and then one of Paul’s great-uncles became a cabbie in the mid-1900s, finally passing on to Paul in the present day. Paul, who lives in
He told the Eastbourne Herald, “Grandad had mentioned something about my great-great- grandad driving a horse and cart but I didn’t really think much of it.
“Then one day he got out the photographs and things started to become clear.” Paul discovered that all three of his taxi-dri- ving relatives were, like him, born and bred in Eastbourne before working as cabbies in the town. As a father of five, Paul says his Eastbourne taxi driving heritage may continue to the next generation. His 18-year-old son Zach Williams is starting to express an interest in the industry. “I think he thinks it is an easy way to make money,” laughed Paul.
He added, “Once he is old enough, and if he wants to get his hack- ney carriage licence, I will encourage that
and may pass the business on to him.” Paul’s partner Sholeh Rockni-Ghajar has also been a hackney carriage driver and the business, SRG Taxis, which Paul set up in August last year,

named after her. But at the moment, Paul is in the driving seat and feels proud to be part of the remarkable story.
