EAST STAFFORDSHIRE CABBIES CLAIM FEES HIKE IS UN-FARE

Taxi firms could be driven to the wall if running costs keep rising, a cabbies’ leader has claimed. The warning came after cab drivers were hit with an increase in their licensing fees by East Staffordshire Bor- ough Council (ESBC), a rise which took effect on April 1. Under the new charges, private hire bosses wanting to set up a new business will be asked to pay £178.50, up from £176 last year, while those wanting to renew their licences will be asked to fork out £152, up from £150.

Meanwhile, existing private hire drivers will be expected to pay £94.30, up from the £93 they paid last year,

and new drivers will be asked to hand over £120.60, up from £119. East Staffordshire Taxi and Private Hire Asso- ciation spokesman Byron Hurd told the Burton Mail: “The trade is totally disgust- ed at the way the council has done this in the climate we’re in because we’re still in a recession and there’s very little trade about. “I can’t see how they can justify this increase when they do not provide us with a service. All they do is take money off us but they don’t give us any- thing in return.

“It’s going to cause hardship all around. Some of the taxi firms could go out of busi- ness. The cost of

diesel is going up, insurance costs are going up and now they’re putting their prices up when there is no trade about.” A council spokesman said: “The council has, of course, taken into consideration the cur- rent economic climate, and this year’s increase of 1.4 per cent in the charge for hackney car- riage and private hire licensing is as minimal as it could be, and comes after the charge was frozen last year. “With regards to the notification, the council is meeting its require- ments by placing the public notice in the local press announc- ing the increase, and this is how we always announce changes.”

EASTLEIGH TAXI FARES SET FOR INCREASE DUE TO INCRESAED COSTS

Cab fares look set to rise in Eastleigh because of the soaring cost of fuel.

The Southern Daily Echo reports that taxi drivers there have requested that the flat rate they can charge at pick up should increase by 50p from a

standard day time rate of £2.20 to £2.70. Meanwhile, night time flat rates between 11pm and 7am and on Sundays and Bank Holidays are poised to go up 30p from £2.60 to £2.90.

The changes were waved through by

Eastleigh Borough Council’s administra- tion committee after members were told costs for operators had rocketed.

New tariffs will be imposed as from April 1 - subject to any objections being received.

ISLE OF WIGHT CABBIES WIN FARE RISE

Taxi fares on the Isle of Wight are to rise for the first time in six years. Councillors approved the rises, largely in waiting charges, after lobbying from the taxi trade.

Isle of Wight Council licensing boss Barry Abraham told the Southern Daily Echo: “The new tariffs bring

the Island in line with areas such as the New Forest and Southamp- ton for a two-mile trip.” Under the changes the current starting fares will now only cover the first half-mile rather than a mile.

And the charge for each additional quar- ter-mile between midnight and 6am will

rise from 60p to 80p. The changes raise the cost of a two-mile trip from £4.60 to £5.40 by day and from £8.40 to £10.80 in the early hours.

Soiling charges will be hiked from £60 to £70. Councillors refused a request to allow cabbies to charge customers 40p for receipts.
