ROTHERHAM TAXI DRIVER IS NO FLABBY CABBIE!!

Tariq Mehrban is a mere shadow of his former self.

In just four years the man who weighed in at 27 stones and was known as ‘fatty’ or ‘fats’ by all his friends, has shed over HALF his body weight. After making an initial drastic cut in calories, the 38-year old plucked up his courage to join a gym and that, he insists, is how he has stayed slim after all other attempts failed. “I’d always been over- weight from being a kid,” Tariq told the South Yorkshire Times. “I tried no end of diets but they only lasted a day or two. I couldn’t stick to them. “I ate all the wrong stuff. Calorie-laden curries and big plate- fuls of food. I wanted to be slim but seem- ingly couldn’t be.” Then came the trigger

moment that shocked him into action with intent.

“I bent down to try and cut my toenails, and struggled so much it left me breathless. I knew then I had to get tough on myself,” added the taxi driver. So he cut out all the fat and stodge from his meals, which in his case was about 3000 calories per day, and within a mere eight months his radical approach lost him four-and-a-half stones. And when a pal per- suaded Tariq to join him for a friendly ses- sion at a gym and fitness club, it led the former foodie to a

whole new lifestyle. “I was like a lot of peo- ple, terrified by the thought of joining a gym. I imagined every- one would stare at me,” said Tariq. “But it wasn’t like that at all and workouts are now a part of my daily rou- tine.”

So much so that Tariq is an early bird - in at 6.30am six mornings a week for sessions with personal trainer Gary Lynam, before starting the school runs in his taxi.

Gary said: “Tariq had the determination to lose weight but the strict diet he’d set him- self wasn’t sustain- able. “We put him on to a much healthier eating and exercise plan and he’s contin- ued to get fitter at a steady pace. He’s done brilliantly well. “There’s no doubt Tariq will have added years to his life by losing the excess weight that slowed him down.

“At 27 stone he would have been under mas- sive risk of heart disease, and he told me he suffered then from aching legs. He was unable to walk anywhere comfort- ably.” Tariq favours the cross-trainer as a fit- ness tool at the gym, and although his mates still call him ‘fats’ as they always have, he knows now it

 is just in jest.

“I lost my initial weight without any guidance but Gary has shown me a good way of liv- ing I can keep to,” he explained.

“I’ve always been an

early bird so getting to the gym every morn- ing isn’t an issue. I like the healthy feeling and if I can lose so much weight by just eating sensibly and exercis- ing, so can anyone.”
