ATTACKS ON WOLVERHAMPTON DRIVERS
A Wolverhampton taxi driver has been stabbed and seven more robbed during a series of terrifying late night attacks.
The drivers, from differ- ent firms, have had hundreds of pounds stolen during the four week spate of inci- dents, cab bosses said. In each case a male
suspect has asked to be taken to a destina- tion before producing a blade and demand- ing the takings. On February 13 a driv- er who tried to fight back was stabbed in the shoulder in Whit- more Reans. Neil Caley, owner of ABC Countdown Cars, which has had four
drivers robbed, told the Express and Star: “It can be a dangerous business at the best of times but this recent spate of attacks is unprecedented.” West Midlands Police confirmed they are investigating a num- ber of robberies but said it was too early to say if they are linked.
TAXI KNIFEPOINT TERROR IN YORK
A female taxi driver was robbed at knife- point in York by two youths who used her own cab to make their escape.
Five men, all from the York area, have been
arrested following the incident, which hap- pened shortly before 3am on February 25 in Acomb.
The victim, Tina Rus- sell, an employee of York private hire firm
659 Taxis, was left stranded beside the roadside following the incident, which saw the men snatch her mobile phone and cash before stealing her grey Volkswagen Passat.
The risk of being involved in a violent confrontation or robbery is very real. The highest risk is to those involved in the transport industry.

The two men had posed as prospective customers and ordered a taxi but when Ms Russell, 48, collected the two men they climbed in the back of her taxi, bran- dished a knife and shouted: “Give me your money”. The men then dragged her out of the car before driv- ing off. Tina, who has been left “very dis- tressed and shocked” following the incident, called the police from the phone box.
The taxi was later found abandoned about half a mile from where the robbery took place.

TAXI FOR DISABLED IN NOTTINGHAM DAMAGED
Thieves have dam- aged a taxi used to transport two disabled students to school. A window was smashed and the radio was taken from the vehicle, owned by Clifton cab firm NG11 Cars, in the early hours of a recent Thurs- day morning.
NG11 Cars boss Kevin Clarke told the Not-
tingham Evening Post: “One of the students goes to South Notting- ham College in West Bridgford and the other goes to a school in Aspley. We’ve had to phone other compa- nies to take them.” Mr Clarke said the incidents were the lat- est in a number of vehicle crimes affect-
ing NG11 Cars and the cars of customers visiting shops close to its base.
A police spokes- man said: “We are reviewing CCTV footage of the inci- dents early on Wednesday and believe we may have identified a number of suspects,” he said.
COVENTRY CABBIE ROBBED OF HIS TAXI
Thugs beat up a cab driver in Coventry before driving off in his taxi. The victim was left with damaged ribs following the attack in Broomfield Road, Earlsdon.
The man, who has been a taxi driver for about ten years, had picked up a fare from the Bull Yard, in the early hours of a recent Sunday morning. He dropped off the three passengers and leaned out of the win- dow to give them their change. But the men forced open the door before dragging out the driver and beating him up. They then
jumped into the seven- seater silver Mercedes and sped off. It was recovered by police later that day in Foleshill. Alias Yousef, chairman of the Taxi Drivers’ Association, told the Coventry Telegraph that he was horrified by the incident but added attacks on taxi drivers in the city are becom- ing all too common. Mr Yousef said the lat- est incident proved how important it is to protect taxi drivers, and criticised the council’s decision not to allow drivers to have metal grilles in hack- ney carriages, which
has caused an ongo- ing dispute in the city. “Coventry Council is totally against protect- ing taxi drivers. They’ve taken away our protection and now we’ve become tar- gets,” he said.
Acting Det Chief Insp Bob Pettipher, of Chace Avenue police station, said an inves- tigation is underway following the incident. The three men are described as all white, all about 5ft 8ins and in their 20s. Two have short ginger hair. Witnesses should con- tact West Midlands Police on 0845 113 5000.
KEIGHLEY TAXIS PELTED WITH ROCKS
A Keighley taxi firm boss has warned that he and other cab busi- nesses might be forced to boycott part of the town following a spate of attacks on drivers.
Five taxis were pelted with rocks in separate incidents last month, leaving two wind- screens damaged and dents to the bodywork of two other cars. Four of the vehicles involved were from Oakworth Road-based Oxford Taxis. The fifth vehicle was operated by Arrows Galaxy Taxis, in Lord Street. Pervez Naik, who owns Oxford Taxis, told the Keighley News: “These were
half bricks being thrown, it’s lucky that someone wasn’t seri- ously injured.
“If this goes on we may have to get together with some of the other firms and consider boycotting the area where it’s happening. “We can’t have our driv- ers’ lives put at risk.” Mr Naik said two more of his company’s cars were hit by rocks on Ingrow Lane.
He said a third inci- dent occurred near Kilmeny Surgery, when youths throwing snowballs at a passing taxi switched to hurl- ing harder objects instead.
In yet another attack,
Arrows Galaxy driver Raja Banaris said he was left shaken after his car was hit by a rock in Ingrow Lane. Keighley town council- lor Javaid Akhtar said: “It just isn’t on. This needs to be brought under control.”
A spokesman for Airedale and North Bradford police said: “We’re aware of inci- dents of anti-social behaviour in Bracken Bank over the week- end and are increasing patrols in the area and working with interested parties regarding the matter. “Anyone with informa- tion should call Keighley NP Team on 01535 617119.”
