UP ON WEARSIDE AND £1000 TIP BRIGHTENS UP DAY FOR SUNDERLAND CABBIE STAN


It was the 9th of March and I was in Sunder- land, standing outside the Stadium of Light, to be precise. It was a beautiful bright day, but cold. A chilly breeze was blowing in off the River Wear. I had gone to Eng- land’s 5th largest football stadium in the hope of finding anoth- er lucky cabbie to tip £1000. Sadly for me, there wasn’t a cabbie in sight. So I made my way down the Wear- mouth Bridge and headed into town. There was a surprising lack of black cabs in the town centre too, so I decided to ring for one. I had spotted a few taxis from Steels Taxis, as I was walking in. So I gave them a call.

No sooner had I put the phone down then I saw it, the familiar orange trilby,


the


unmistakeable blue trench-coat, the fistful of cash... it was my sticker! The lucky owner’s name was Mr Stanley Leadbetter. And it’s fair to say he was absolutely made up with his £1000 tip. “I’m so shocked and very happy,” he said. “It was my 50th birth- day last week... what a fabulous birthday present. I never thought I would win when I put the sticker up in my cab!”
