IT PAYS TO FOLLOW THE BOOK! THE BERNIE THE BOOK COLUMN
The bookies had a field day at Cheltenham winning an esti- mated £60 million. Most tipsters lost but fortunately if you fol- lowed the Book then at least you kept your head above water. In my advice first given in February I napped MENORAH at 8/1 (starting price 11/1) thinking it the only opposition to the Irish wonder horse, Dunguib. And just maybe Paddy Power followed my lead with their wonderful pre-festival offer. In addition and despite good value on a number of good things we did round the week off with BIG ZEB at 10/1 in the Champion. For those that see this column prior to Saturday 27 March on our website then please note I really fancy the chances of GIO PONTI in the Dubai World Cup. Sadly those that read this col- umn in the normal way will either be happy or sad
Meanwhile.... THE GRAND NATIONAL
With the expectation of going no worse than good to soft and the likelihood of decent good ground my two against the field in this year’s National are as follows. My main fancy is Evan Williams’ stable star STATE OF PLAY. A Previous winner around Aintree, best on good going and running a great race last year, this season’s winner of the Charlie Hall is currently available at 25/1. He surely will be in the mix. My second selection is the enigmatic CHARACTER BUILDING who has had most of the season off. If arriving at Aintree fit and if Ferdy Murphy can get a racecourse run into him then 33/1 currently available will seem a great price. Obviously the two Nicholls horses at the top of the market have to be respected but personally I was quite unimpressed by Tricky Trickster in the Aon and 16/1 does- n’t groove my truffles. Please note that if the going conditions have the word heavy in them, then all bets are off and I would heartily advise you plunge your wife’s housekeeping on BLACK APPALACHI. He absolutely hacked up round Aintree at the No- vember meeting and cannot be opposed. For those with access to the weather conditions on 10th April within a two mile ra- dius of the course, or for those of you who want to take the 16/1 now on the hope it rains then fill your boots!
1000 & 2000 GUINEAS
Ballydoyle have the 2000 Guineas sewn up with ST NICHOLAS ABBEY at 7/2 (Coral) but I fancy taking on the French filly in the distaff equivalent with Luca Cumani’s SETAwho is a general 14/1 across the village but still currently 16/1 with Boyles. And finally to....
THE MASTERS
My three against the field are: L. WESTWOOD 20/1 S. STRICKER 16/1 L. DONALD 66/1 and I would suggest 20 units win LEE WESTWOOD 15 units win STEVE STRICKER 5 x 5 units each way LUKE DONALD

MASSALET MEANWHILE...
I hope you enjoyed our first column last month; I know at least 62 of you did as you registered your interest on the
Taxipoker.net website and played online in some free rolls and cash games. I hope you had a great time. To discover further then please look at the advert opposite for full details.
Meanwhile we are holding our first poker tournament in our UK Taxi Poker Tour, with our first event occuring at the G-Casino Manchester on May 11. Again full details can be found in our Point of Sale Section on page 103. In this month’s truncated column we list hand percentages and a few more glossary of terms to guide you through your first tournament. Until next month, heads up! GLOSSARY OF TERMS JACKSON FIVE = Jack and a Five MIXED MARRIAGE = King and a Queen off suit OUT
= A card that will make your hand win
PAIR OF DOGS = A King and a Nine (Canine) HAND PERCENTAGES
It is well worth understanding the value of your hand pre flop and the chances you have of winning when you are head to head against another hand. Here are some common hands.
BIGGER POCKET PAIR VERSUS SMALLER POCKET PAIR 80% versus 20%
SMALL POCKET PAIR VERSUS TWO OVER CARDS 53% versus 47%
POCKET PAIR VERSUS TWO UNDER CARDS 86% versus 14%
POCKET PAIR VERSUS ONE OVER CARD AND ONE UNDER CARD 72% versus 28%
POCKET PAIR VERSUS SAME CARD AND ONE OVER CARD 66% versus 30% (the remaining 4% is for a split pot)
POCKET PAIR VERSUS SAME CARD AND ONE UNDER CARD 93% versus 6% (the remaining 1% is for a split pot)
TWO OVER CARDS VERSUS TWO UNDER CARDS 65% versus 35%
OVER CARD AND UNDER CARD VERSUS TWO MIDDLE CARDS 62% versus 38%
SAME RANKS (SUITED VERSUS NON SUITED) 7% versus 2% (the remaining 91% is for a split pot)
NB The above odds don’t take into account hands where the over/under cards are suited. In reality a percentage of 2% should be added at the pre- flop stage.
