... as they say in some parts of Yorkshire. Never a dull moment in taxi and private hire land, that’s for sure. Like for example, take Page One: the long awaited revised Best Practice Guidance has been issued by the Department for Trans- port. Of course we don’t really have the space to duplicate the BPG with- in these pages, but on Page One you’ll find the web link to the DfT page where you can down- load the entire document. It’s tight- ened up on some subjects, elucidated on others, and hopefully more councils will now take its contents seri- ously - the way the courts are doing. This month we’ve hand- ed Opinion over to the National Limousine and Chauffeur Association, and follow their article with the Government’s response. But of course Chief Anorak has still

been busy in other quarters, not least of which keeping track of the latest League Table changes. There’s a bit of upward movement creeping back into the hackney fares in some parts, which does everybody’s fares some good ultimately. Is it your turn yet? When was your last tariff review?

Our Company Profile this time is about DG Cars of Nottingham and our Driver Profile features a worldwide traveller from Telford, Will Walker.

month’s entry hails from Essex, where seventeen volunteers of the North Stifford Community Group - some of them pensioners - gave up three hours of their time on a recent cold day to tidy up their village. They filled 43 bags of rubbish between them, only to be sent a sniffy email reprimand by Thurrock Council, sug- gesting that the results of their labours were “excessive”. Evidently the email was issued after a three-man dust- bin crew sent to collect

the rubbish was unable to carry on with their usual round because their vehicle was full. The complaint was all the more surprising as the council had approved the operation and provided the volun- teers with bin bags and litter-picking sticks, responding to a peti- tion by 300 villagers for a clean-up.

As one might imagine, members of the volun- teer group were upset and disappointed, and the close-knit commu- nity who wanted this

done were “infuriated by the whole ridiculous situation.” The council subsequently apolo- gised to the group, saying that the email had been “sent in error”. You couldn’t make it up...

So with the popularity award of the month going to the cleansing manager of Thurrock Council for his tact and diplomacy, we leave you with the thought that if you enjoy the rest of this issue, we’ve done our bit. No pick- ing up any litter, mind...
