AWARDING ACHIEVEMENT ALL HAIL MACCLESFIELD TAXI DRIVERS

the town’s largest taxi firms, Pat Gillick, from Spare Time Taxis, and John Hanmer,

from

David Allman, Eddie Nolan, Susannah Tyson, (Warrington College) John Hanmer, and Pat Gillick received their awards.

Macclesfield taxi driv- ers have proved they have got the drive to succeed after 20 of them were awarded the NVQ Level 2 in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving.

The drivers were pre- sented with certificates by Susannah Tyson, managing director at Warrington Business School. To achieve the qualifi- cation, the drivers had to complete a rigorous

practical course under the supervision of the business schools training staff.

This included being tested on their practi- cal knowledge of the job, how to cope in dif- ferent day-to-day scenarios and even the legal issues sur- rounding their role. Only when they have proved that they meet all the criteria are they awarded the NVQ. The owners of two of

Silver Town Taxis, with support from Mike James from the Mac- clessfield Licensing Office, were involved in putting more than seventy drivers for- ward for the qualification. Pat said: “It’s really inspiring to see so many of Maccles- field’s taxi drivers achieving this qualifi- cation.

“The fact that most drivers are self- employed poses a real challenge in the stan- dardisation of their knowledge and ex- pertise.

“This qualification makes real progress towards the profes- sionalism of the taxi industry in the UK.”

GRAVESHAM DRIVERS’ NEW QUALIFICATION

A group of 56 Grave- sham taxi drivers, both hackney carriage and private hire, have gained a new qualifi- cation.

They received certifi- cates for the taxi driving NVQ and BTEC awards at a ceremony

at Gravesend Civic Centre last month. Rick Davis, a member of the United Taxi Group of Gravesend, which represents driv- ers in the borough, was one of the recipients. He told the Dartford Times: “I have been

driving a taxi tor 21 years but it was useful as it covered every- thing. The government is looking at making it compulsory to have a qualification so we took it upon ourselves to take action instead of it being forced on us.”

A2B Worthing Private Hire, a 60-car fleet, was given the ‘Business of the Year 2010’ award by their local radio sta- tion, Splash FM, on Thursday, 18th March. Proprietor Lynne Roberts runs the busi- ness with her son Jon, who has been involved with the firm since he was 12! Lynne was delighted to accept the award, and told PHTM: “Well, what a surprise! 25
