UNINSURED BRADFORD DRIVERS CAUGHT
Twenty-three unin- sured vehicles were taken off the road dur- ing a clampdown in Bradford. Police arrested 11 peo- ple during a day-long operation last month for
offences including pos- session of Class B drugs and taking a vehi- cle without consent. According to the York- shire Post, more than £4,250 was recovered from unpaid fines and
43 fixed penalty notices were issued - mainly for no seat belts, mobile phone use and no MOT. Sixteen taxis were checked and five sus- pension notices given.
Police took 14 cabs off the road during a crack- down on defective vehicles last month. Nearly 100 taxis were inspected during the two-day exercise in Solihull town centre and inspections at the council offices.
Most of the defective cabs had illegal tyre tread depth or faulty

Sgt Martin Williams said: “We’re closing in on those who choose not to make the road- worthiness of their vehicle a priority.
It’s
frightening seeing some drivers, whose cars are running on bald tyres, struggling to maintain control.” A further 13 cabs had

A clampdown on driv- ers parking illegally in Leeds city centre has seen 144 tickets being issued.
The partnership between highways chiefs and local police saw enforcement offi- cers issuing tickets for a variety of offences.
Some 14 PHVs illegal- ly plying for trade were suspended pending further investigation. Prime targets for the partnership include vehicles in breach of parking regulations, “over ranking” on taxi ranks and PHVs plying for hire.
Chief Insp Vernon Francis, responsible for policing in Leeds city centre, said: “By working together with the council we can reduce congestion on the city centre roads. The weekend’s opera- tion was a great success.”

One in five cars pulled over in a police crack- down on suspect vehicles was a taxi. And half of those PHVs had their licences revoked on the spot because they should not have been on Bolton’s roads, officers found. The results of the police operation last month prompted calls for the authorities to get tougher on PHVs - and drivers with “peo- ple’s lives in their

Officers from Greater Manchester Police were out in force in Deane on a recent Fri- day as part of a national day of action. They used Automatic Number Plate Recog- nition (ANPR) tech- nology to pull over 150 vehicles in four hours. Of those, 28 were PHVs, of which 15 had their licences sus- pended immediately. Asif Vali runs Rapid
Private Hire and has about 40 vehicles operating in Bolton. He told the Bolton Eevening News: “This should not be happen- ing and raises questions: Are the own- ers getting warnings or reprimands? Should the council go back to testing vehicles, instead of opening it up to other garages? The private hire association and council need to look at these issues.”

Nine illegal PHVs have been seized by police in Gloucester in a new clampdown. Seven of the nine vehicles were seized during the operation last month. Gloucester City Safer Community Team joined forces with roads policing officers, special constabulary officers and city coun- cil officials for the crackdown, code- named Operation Aero.
The operation was launched following a growing number of complaints about
PHVs picking up pas- sengers who had not pre-booked.
Sgt Elonor Lakin, of the Safer Community Team told the Gloucester Citizen: “This opera- tion was a great success; nine taxi driv- ers were prosecuted for a range of offences on the first night. “However, the number prosecuted on the second night was half that of the first, show- ing that lessons were already being learnt.” A spokesman for Gloucester City Coun- cil said: “We are now
in the process of deciding what appro- priate action we should take against the drivers.”
Mmmm…With the greatest respect to the council, it’s obvi- ous that by the second night of this clampdown, word had spread round the trade like wildfire - they would have scarpered. So of course prosecutions halved. The council should see if “lessons are being learnt” in two months’ time. - Ed.
