KAOHSIUNG A PORT EVOLVES
A LITTLE FURTHER south again is Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s premier port, which today is looking to kick on from its historic role to embrace fresh opportunities. The once industrial margins of the harbour are being revitalised as the Asia New Bay Area, with new residential towers joining showpiece buildings such as the futuristic Kaohsiung Music Center. On the waterfront there’s the stylish cruise terminal, inspired by the fuid lines of a leaping whale, and – one stop away on a gleaming new light rail train – the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center (KEC). Under the KEC’s wave-shaped roof is the two-storey North Hall with meeting rooms and the Grand Hall conference room for 2,000 people on the second foor, while next door the 9,100 sqm column-free South Hall extends the full 27m height of the
building so that it’s able to host even the likes of yacht and drone shows. An outdoor plaza at the back extends all the way to the waterfront. Away from the port but also on the light rail’s circuit of

downtown Kaohsiung is another regenerated area called Pier 2, a collection of warehouses-turned-boutiques ideal for picking up a souvenir or browsing trendy apparel. At contrasting scales, the Asia New Bay Area and Pier 2 encapsulate the city’s eagerness to build beyond its geographical and historical advantages. Like Tainan and Taipei, it sees attracting more visitors – whether they come for work or play – as necessary to its future, and they are not afraid to spend big to make it happen.
