THE NEW HORIZON Building, site of AMF, is one of the capital’s cosier venues, suited to a forum for leading lights of the local MICE industry, plus experts from the region and beyond. The building itself sits close to an old tobacco factory now repurposed into the Taiwan Design Museum, and the chic eateries and boutiques of the pedestrianised Songshan Cultural & Creative Park, all in the shadow of Taipei Dome, the city’s premier sports and concert venue. The area is testament to Taipei’s embrace of its colonial past and clarity about its future. There’s a Japanese-like sense of order and functionality about city services.


Public squares and play areas bring oases of green even to central neighbourhoods. Wide streets allow


for bike lanes across much of the city. There are hundreds of independent cafes passionate about coffee or tea – there’s even


a healthy number of bookstores still. Then there are, of course, the famous night markets, thronged with


locals and visitors alike, with food from around the country and across the world.

She is keen to point to an important societal aspect: “Its cultural diversity is rooted in its history with infuences from the Dutch, Chinese and Japanese,” she says. “As the frst Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage, Taiwan also demonstrates openness and inclusivity, making it especially appealing to international delegates.” Those delegates will fnd that much larger venues await in the shape of the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC), next to Taipei 101 in Xinyi District, a one-stop MICE venue, combining Taipei International Convention Center (TICC) with exhibition halls, the International Trade Building and the Grand Hyatt Taipei hotel. The 23,450 sqm Exhibition Hall 1 has room for more than 1,300 booths, and hosts many of the country’s biggest shows. On top of that, just a 15-minute drive to the north-east, is Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center (TaiNEX), where Hall 1 has two foors, each over 23,000 sqm, while Hall 2 has nine foors confgurable to offer spaces from 100 sqm to more than 6,000 sqm. Of course, you can lead attendees to a convention, but you can’t necessarily make them interact. For that you need a moderator. At the AMF that man was Mike van de Vijver of meetings solutions experts Orange Gibbon. Asked about the local MICE industry’s strengths, he says, “People here are very serious about what they do. You fnd very high levels of customer-friendliness and service-orientation. They are more focused on delivering well than on delivering at a low price, which is a difference in my experience with places like Singapore and Hong Kong. “I see the great variety of what the country has to offer as a bonus, too. I think MICE should not primarily be about that, but it will infuence decision-making.”
