New vessels review

First flying electric ferry in the U.S. destined for Lake Tahoe

Spain's tax agency takes delivery of new offshore patrol vessel

The Spanish Tax Administration Agency (Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria; AEAT) recently took delivery of a new offshore patrol vessel (OPV). Peregrino I will be operated out of the AEAT's station in Cadiz. The vessel's duties will include patrol, surveillance, interception, counter-smuggling operations, and enforcement of both national and international law within Spanish waters.

The OPV has an FRP hull, an LOA of 35.3 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a depth of 3.4 metres, two 12,000-litre fuel tanks, and space for 10 crewmembers and other personnel.

Swedish boatbuilder Candela and a company called FlyTahoe have announced that the first U.S.-based electric foiling ferry, the Candela P-12, will soon debut on Lake Tahoe.

The P-12 is a 30-seat vessel, designed to accommodate both skis and bikes, uses hydrofoil technology computer-guided underwater wings to fly above the water’s surface.

The wings lift the hull above the water, significantly reducing drag and cutting energy consumption by about 80 percent compared to conventional vessels. The P-12 can be fully propelled by renewable electricity instead of fossil fuels, while providing a smooth ride above the waves at high speeds, making seasickness an unlikely event.

New electric river ferry to be operated in West Bengal, India

Indian state-owned shipbuilder Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers has handed over a new electric catamaran ferry to the Transport Department of India's West Bengal state. Dheu ("Wave") has an aluminium hull, an FRP superstructure, a length of 24 metres, an air-conditioned cabin that can house 150 passengers, and a 246kWh liquid-cooled battery that drives two 50kW motors connected to propellers to deliver a top speed of 10 knots. The battery can be charged via shore connection or a set of onboard PV panels with a total output of 18 kWh. A 50kW diesel generator is also fitted for use during emergencies. Dheu was built in compliance to Indian Register of Shipping class rules.
