An IIMS memory from back in time:
How it all started Capt Erik Hammarstrom writes…
When cleaning my desk after well over 40 years in the marine surveying field I found a copy of notes from the inaugural meeting for the formation of IIMS together with some photographs with participants from the meeting at Baltic Exchange on 14 August 1991 when the decision under the chairmanship of Capt Bill McDonald was taken to initiate the founding of IIMS.
Looking back to that day when we met at the Baltic Exchange, it is quite rewarding to see that the seed planted on 14 August 1991 has grown into a sturdy professional organization with a number of important branches, today rooted all over the world and serving the marine industry in varying ways.
And most important is that the idea of establishing a platform for initial and further education of marine surveyors has been achieved in order to set professional standards and expanded knowledge to ensure clients with urgent needs of marine surveying will be served by a professional, competent, experienced and certified attendee.
Date for your diary: IIMS Annual General Meeting

IIMS is considering launching a formal mentoring scheme for
members and students If you are an IIMS member and are interested in potentially becoming a mentor to other less experienced members and perhaps students, then we would like to hear from you – no obligation at this time of course.
Over a number of years, IIMS has assessed the possibility of developing a mentoring programme, but it is not an easy task. But thanks to an IIMS member who has come up with a blueprint, the proposal is now under
serious consideration. But before any scheme can be launched, we need to know that there are enough potential mentors at worldwide locations who might be interested in doing this.
Many of us throughout our careers will have benefitted from being mentored by a more experienced colleague. It is one of the ways in which we grow and develop as individuals.
Mentoring is described as a collaborative relationship where an experienced person, or mentor, helps a less experienced person, or mentee, grow and develop through shared knowledge and experiences. Mentoring can take place in a variety of settings, using various different methods.
