person audience, including Ian’s proud daughter and son.
‘Heel test’ training on under 24-metre vessels is notoriously hard to organise, but under the leadership of IIMS Certifying Authority Chairman, Fraser Noble, a group of 20 surveyors came together at Haslar Marina, Gosport in the UK. The practical hands-on day proved a success as the group heeled a catamaran workboat and a RIB before recording the data.
Further afield, the Western Mediterranean Large Yacht and Small Craft training event in Palma at the end of April (the first since 2019) drew a strong contingent on both days from the local area as well as one delegate who travelled some distance from Poland.
And in early May, our inland waterways working group met at a marina in Nottinghamshire, UK for a day’s training which proved to be hugely valuable. Further short reports with supporting photos about these events can be found in the members’ news section of this publication.
We are planning to attend KORMARINE in Busan, South Korea, in October 2023, with a stand in the UK Pavilion and hopefully, an opportunity to present a paper at the conference which is titled ‘Maritime Sustainability Innovation for a Greener Future.’
We have had several ZOOM gatherings in the past six months with our members around the
Asia Pacific region, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia and New Zealand. All the members who have joined these gatherings have been enthusiastic about IIMS and value their membership. They have all expressed interest in us having more regional-centered events. We are looking at a possible schedule for 2024 to have more face-to-face regional events based on other conferences and trade shows that are relevant to our members.
We all need to keep up to date with evolving technologies in the marine industry and one topic that is prevalent and of concern is lithium-ion batteries. You will have seen several articles in the Report Magazine and the IIMS news bulletins in the past twelve months offering different perspectives on the technology. Many relate to installation and the safety of these batteries. Several presentations have offered different perspectives on the technology with a large emphasis being placed on the various ‘toys’ that are stored onboard Mega Yachts, posing a potential risk with over 70 reported major incidents last year alone, some of them catastrophic. Also, the risks presented for batteries in transit and as cargo are becoming more well-known. What you need to know about lithium-ion batteries and ‘Thermal Runaway’, will be presented by Ian Bartle, Managing Director of Nobel Fire Systems at our Annual Conference on 7th
June
2023. You don’t have to be there in person either. Join as an online delegate to take advantage of
Peter Broad,
CEng, CMarEng, FIIMS, FIMarEST President IIMS
this essential knowledge sharing and the other topics that will be presented on that day.
We will also be discussing insurance and report writing software and what AI can bring to the marine surveying sector.
We are also delighted that Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, CBE, the first person to complete a single-handed non-stop circumnavigation of the globe in 1969, will join us for the Conference to give a short presentation.
I look forward to meeting you at the Conference Dinner on the 6th of June, or the AGM the following morning and the Conference on the 7th
of June that follows.
And I urge you to attend either in person or virtually and join in the Yacht & Small Craft, or Commercial Ship presentations that will be run through the later morning and afternoon of the 7th of June 2023 for your benefit.
