But how can we determine whether ChatGPT wrote the report?

There are software tools which can determine with some degree of certainty whether textual compilations were written by Artificial Intelligence / ChatGPT. ZeroGPT is one such tool and is currently considered to be the most advanced and reliable Chat GPT detector tool.

To validate ZeroGPT, I used a “survey report” previously written by ChatGPT as input to ZeroGPT.

If we assign a probability of 80% or greater to the event “it is written by AI/GPT”, then from the output from ZeroGPT it is clear that the report was written by ChatGPT.

Now I will make similar, but more detailed marine survey related requests to ChatGPT which drive different responses.

My request to ChatGPT: Write a Marine Surveyor Report on the condition of a Contessa 32.

Response from ChatGPT is: As an AI language model, I cannot conduct a marine survey on a Contessa 32 or any other vessel. However, I can provide you with a sample outline of what a marine surveyor report on the condition of a Contessa 32 might look like.

I. Introduction

• Brief overview of the vessel and the purpose of the survey

II. General Information • Vessel name, make, model, year, and hull number

• Owner’s name and contact information

• Date and location of the survey • Weather and sea conditions during the survey

III. Hull and Deck

• Description of hull and deck construction materials

• Visual inspection of hull and deck for any signs of damage or wear • Moisture readings of the hull

• Inspection of the keel, rudder, and through-hulls

• Assessment of the condition of the non-skid surface • Summary of findings

IV. Rigging and Sails • Description of rigging and sail materials

• Visual inspection of rigging for any signs of wear or damage

• Assessment of the condition of the sails

• Inspection of the mast and boom

• Testing of the furling system and winches

• Summary of findings

V. Engine and Mechanical Systems • Description of the engine and mechanical systems

• Visual inspection of the engine and engine compartment

• Testing of the engine for proper operation

• Assessment of the condition of the fuel and water tanks

• Inspection of the bilge pumps and other mechanical systems

• Summary of findings VI. Electrical and Plumbing Systems

• Description of the electrical and plumbing systems

• Testing of the electrical system for proper operation

• Inspection of the wiring and electrical components

• Assessment of the condition of the plumbing system

• Inspection of the seacocks and hoses

• Summary of findings

VII. Safety Equipment • Description of the safety equipment on board

• Assessment of the condition and suitability of the safety equipment

• Inspection of the life rafts and EPIRBs

• Summary of findings

VIII. Conclusion • Overall assessment of the vessel’s condition

• Opinion on whether the vessel is suitable for its intended use

• Recommendations for repairs or upgrades that may be necessary

• Estimated cost of any repairs or upgrades

Response form ZeroGPT is as follows and indicates that with 83.21% degree of certainty the report was AI/GPT generated:
