OFID IN ACTION

Cultural preservation and better housing for Palestinians

OFID’s grant will help restore 85 residential units inhabited by Palestinian families in the Old City of Hebron.

Project title: Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings and Houses in the Old City of Hebron Amount: $1.5m Channel: IsDB Mechanism: Grant assistance

OFID has signed a $1.5m grant agreement with the IsDB for a project that will renovate 85 residential units belonging to disadvantaged Palestinian families. The project is implemented by the Hebron Rehabilitation Committee (HRC).

Since its creation in 1996, HRC has renovated over 1,300 houses, shops and cultural monuments to encour- age the local population to continue

to live and work in the Old City, despite the numerous challenges associated with this.

The restoration of residential complexes will provide employment, improve living conditions for around 680 people, and in addition, help preserve Hebron’s rich cultural heritage. OFID’s grant will also help finance the ongoing restoration of the Ibrahimi Mosque, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.

OFID and the IsDB

OFID and the IsDB enjoy a long- standing partnership that spans more than 40 years. OFID has extended

61

grants of $12.25m in support of seven other projects administrated by the IsDB across various sectors in Asia and Africa, and joint operations include co-financing nearly 150 projects, primarily in Africa, to the tune of $5.25bn.
