Health: Concerted and sustained efforts required
Population groups and regions have been neglected
Strategic context
Much progress has been made on SDG 3 related to good health and wellbeing. Nevertheless, as The Sustainable Develop- ment Goals Report 2018* states, people are still suffering needlessly from preventable diseases, and too many are dying prema- turely. Overcoming disease and ill health, according to the report, will require concerted and sustained efforts, focusing on population groups and regions that have been neglected.

As of December 31, 2018, OFID’s cumulative commitments to development projects in the health sector were $1,037.1m. The organization focuses on global, regional and national health initiatives aimed at preventing and treating high- burden diseases, such as HIV / AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, neglected tropical diseases, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer and diabetes.
Activities in 2018
In 2018, $140.5m was approved to finance development operations in the health sector. This included two public sector loans to China totaling $91.6m to build a medical

center for the elderly in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region ($50m) and to expand the Hohhot Mongolian Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine ($41.6m).
OFID’s Trade Finance Facility approved $45.8m.
Grant financing totaled $3.1m and sup- ported initiatives aimed at eliminating neglected tropical diseases in seven African countries, and NCDs in five countries in Asia and Africa, as well as improving maternal and child health in Mozambique. Also financed was the expansion of cancer care in Jordan.
