OFID IN ACTION

Water and sanitation: Bringing clean drinking water to Malawi

Improved access to water will especially benefit women and children, who often spend hours each day fetching water.

Project title: Rehabilitation, Upgrading and Expansion of Karonga Water Supply System Amount: $15m Mechanism: Public Sector loan Co-financiers: BADEA, govern- ment of Malawi

A $15m OFID loan approved in March will help boost potable water supplies in Karonga town in Malawi’s northern region, where demand is outpacing supply. Once the project is completed, the town’s 101,000 residents will be able to enjoy improved health and livelihoods.

The project falls in line with the government of Malawi’s aim of achieving 95% water coverage by

2025 and of reducing water losses in line with the United Nations SDG 6, which calls on global efforts to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

OFID’s loan will support the upgrad- ing of water-related infrastructure such as pipelines, pumping stations and a water treatment plant, and the construction of an access road.

In addition to improving general living standards, the project is expected to specifically benefit women and children who presently walk long distances to fetch water, and often spend two to three hours at a water point.
