OFID IN ACTION

Education: Training for the modern job market in Kenya and Uganda

OFID’s grant to ICEP will help provide job opportunities for youth and promote entrepreneurship in Kenya and Uganda.

Project title: Promotion of Quality Entrepreneurial Training in Eastern Africa Amount: $800,000 Mechanism: Grant assistance Channel: Institut zur Cooperation bei Entwicklungs-Projekten (ICEP)

The NGO known as ICEP was established in 1996 in OFID’s host country Austria. One of its core functions is helping vocational training centers (VTCs) align their programs with the needs of the private sector to provide young people – particu- larly women – with job opportunities and to promote entrepreneurship.

OFID recently approved a grant to ICEP to help improve employment opportunities for youth and promote entrepreneurship and business

creation in Kenya and Uganda. There are eight ICEP-partnered VTCs in Kenya and Uganda offering training relevant to the modern job market, including business management, information and communication technology, electronics, catering and hotel management, and tailoring and fashion design-related offerings.

ICEP’s duel systems methodology – which combines theoretical training with practical experience in a work setting – and the project more generally will be promoted in neighboring countries of the Great Lakes Region, in particular Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania. In addition to significantly expanding entrepreneur- ial training for SMEs in Kenya, the project aims to integrate the focus on business creation – and the dual

systems thinking – into the core education curriculum in Kenya and Uganda.

Around 116 teachers and trainers, as well as 4,200 underprivileged young people and 2,700 entrepreneurs, are expected to benefit from this project.

OFID’s partnership with ICEP dates back to 2003 through its support of five projects.
