OFID IN ACTION Health: Caring for China’s aging population
The new state-of-the-art complex will help meet the medical needs of China’s burgeoning elderly population.
Project title: Hohhot Healthcare Amount: $41.6m Mechanism: Public Sector loan Co-financier: Government of China
In June, OFID approved a $41.6m loan to China to co-fund the construction of a medical and care center for the elderly alongside the existing Hohhot Mongolian Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
China’s aging population is growing – recent estimates indicate that the over-65s account for nearly 11 per- cent of the country’s 1.4 billion- strong population – or 150 million people. By 2050, this figure is expected to jump to more than 25 percent.
Specialized medical care for the elderly lags behind what is needed for meeting present and future needs; an issue exacerbated by rapid urbanization and a strain on infra- structure – including health facilities.
Hohhot, the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, has one of the most rapidly-aging popula- tions in China and the Chinese government approached OFID to help finance the construction of a specialized medical facility.
The project will construct a 700-bed complex with a combined floor area of circa 71,000 m2 that will house speciality departments (including cardiology, neurology and oncology), and offer assistance in the areas of
prevention, rehabilitation, health management and hospice care.
The new facility will provide outpa- tient services for over 500,000 individuals per year and employ around 1,365 medical and adminis- trative staff.
• In 2018, OFID also approved a $50m loan for the construction of a 900-bed medical and care center for the elderly in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China.
